Dorcas, b. ca. 1724, Rhode Island, m. William Hadsell

On the Latter Day Saints' website (www.familysearch.org) there is a submission about Dorcas Eggleston, born in Rhode Island circa 1718-1725 to Joseph and Sarah (Mott) Eggleston. This Dorcas married a William Hadsell and the submission to the LDS lists only seven children from 1747 to 1758, with explicit dates of birth in Hopkinton, Washington County, Rhode Island. Does anyone know if these dates come from the Rhode Island Vital Records?

In addition, a book (available through google books) entitled "Gazetteer of Berkshire County, Mass., 1725-1885", by Hamilton Child, states, "William Hadsell came from Nine Partners, N. Y., about the year 1777, and located on the place where George H. now resides, which place has always been in the Hadsell family since. William reared a family of ten children, none of whom are now living, although there are descendants residing here, viz.: Mrs. Dorcas Gardner, daughter of Isaac, William and George Hadsell, and Mrs. Kirk Gardner."

Based on birth, marriage and death records posted at the Berkshire County genweb, and on census data from 1790 to 1820 for Berkshire, I wonder if there weren't three more children than are reported at the LDS. My belief would be that both Elijah and Isaac Hadsell were sons of William and Dorcas.

Finally, I wonder if William and Dorcas had a daughter named Elizabeth, born about 1760, and who married a Nathan Whitford of Berkshire County, MA circa 1778, then moved (sometime between 1790 census and 1800 census) to Rensselaerville, Albany County, New York (by 1820 part of Rensselaerville becamse Westerlo). On www.rootsweb.com, some researchers have stated that Nathan Whitford's wife was an Elizabeth "Harshall" but that name almost doesn't exist, but Hadsell certainly does. I wonder if someone mis-read some old handwritten text and made a best "guess" about her surname. Hadsell could look like Harshall if the writing was bad, or the document damaged.

Does anyone have a complete listing of the children of William and Dorcas (Eggleston) Hadsell? Please contact me directly at duaneaboggs@live.com
