That's why you should get the Social security applications for the boys, to see what their mother's maiden name was.
If it were my family, I would also look at land records, both in Copiah Co., and in Pickens Co., AL to see if Sam owned land in either place, when he bought the land, did he sell it? or was it part of his estate when hen died? Given that one of the boys said he was born in Fernbank, AL, I would also look in Lamar Co. AL records.
