I don't have a lot of information on Rev. Maggie Edwards Wallace. She was ordained in the Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church and began her preaching career in Brown County, OH.
Her husband, Neville Redmon Wallace, had returned from service in the Civil War as a partial invalid who was never able to hold down a full time job afterwards. I presume it was necessary for his wife to find somekind of employment to support the family. (They had 3 children.) In those days there were few occupations open to women. I don't known what level of education she had, but have guessed that she may have graduated from high school. From other examples of that time a would-be preacher would work toward ordination by serving some sort of apprentiship under a working minister.
Many returning Civil War veterans from Brown County moved west to Atchison County, MO which is the extreme NW tip of that state. Maggie and Neville followed that migration in the late 1860's. It was in Atchison Co. that my grandparents, William Wallace and Dora Anderson, were married although they were both natives of Brown County.
Again there are a few news items about Rev. Maggie Wallace
preaching in that area. Later they relocated into Iowa and then back to Atchison Co.
Meanwhile my grandparents moved to Nance County, NE where they raised a large family in the Edwards tradition.
My mother recalled that she was very proud of having a grandmother who served as a guest preacher in their church whenever she came for a visit. It was a bit of a beginning for women's lib within my family, my grandmother Wallace doing all she could to encourage her daughters to get an education so they would not be forced to be just farmer's wives. My mother, the 11th of 13 children, was able to go away to a boarding highschool and college at a time when that was rather unusual. After Neville Wallace died, Maggie moved to Nance county to be close to her children.
She died in Nance county but is buried back in Atchison Co next to her husband.
I have a copy of a formal portrait photo of Neville and Maggie probably in their 50's. I'll scan it and forward a copy to you.
