I believe that some of the dates were confused between Robert Edwards and James Edwards. Their middle names may or may not have been "alexander" and "william"... I don't think any of us will ever know for sure, but what I do know is that James had a brother named Alexander and that the dates 1702 or 1703 kept popping up when researching this line. I also know that somehow, the legend of "William, Duke of Orange" crept into the family legend, as well as the many connection to Richard Edwards and Ann Ruffin.

I have found the same lineage of Richard Edwards / Ann Ruffin on RootsWeb and have also discovered something which may explain how the Edwards ended up in Scotland, when they were originally from Wales, and where the names of Robert's "siblings" came from.

This site places a Robert Edwards (Born 1677) as a Captain in the army of William of Orange. His father's name was William and his grandfather's name was William. His G-G-Grandfather was Richard Edwards, who married Ann Ruffin and was born in 1566. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2187666&id=I8088

This next site lists the same information, but lists a son named Robert Edwards, born 1703. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2188312&id=I7867

According to this last site, "Note: (Medical):Robert died while his wife, Elizabeth was pregnant with his second child. Elizabeth died in childbirth (I think or shortly after) Children were brought by the Wren family."

There's no information on this Robert Edwards, but it's possible that Robert and Francis were raised in Scotland by the Wren family, or that Robert moved to Scotland to start over once he came of age. His brother Francis moved to Northern Ireland, where he raised his family and died, and his children match the names I originally had as Robert's own siblings, making them his nieces and nephews.

1. Thomas M EDWARDS b: 1727 in Kilkenny (Carlow) Ireland
2. Francis EDWARDS b: Cir 1729 in Kilkenny (Carlow) Ireland
3. Robert EDWARDS b: 1730 in Kilkenny (Carlow) Ireland
4. Elizabeth EDWARDS b: Abt 1732 in Kilkenny (Carlow) Ireland
5. Edward EDWARDS b: Cir 1733 in Kilkenny (Carlow) Ireland
6. John EDWARDS b: 1735 in Kilkenny (Carlow) Ireland
7. Joshua EDWARDS b: 1735 in Kilkenny (Carlow) Ireland
8. William EDWARDS b: 1737 in Kilkenny (Carlow) Ireland
9. Martha EDWARDS b: 1739 in Kilkenny (Carlow) Ireland
10. Leonard EDWARDS b: 1740 in Kilkenny (Carlow) Ireland
11. Jacob EDWARDS b: 1740 in Kilkenny (Carlow) Ireland
12. Richard EDWARDS b: Abt 1741 in Kilkenny (Carlow) Ireland

Helen Hinchliff places James William Edwards' birth around 1727, so these dates would definitely match, and the many William, Richard and Roberts in this lineage would be enough to make anyone go insane trying to sort it out, however, this information, I believe, answers some of the questions surrounding Robert "Alexander" Edwards and James "William" Edwards.
