Robert asks about Edmondsons/Edmundsons of North
Carolina and just how the name should be spelled.
A number of my Edmonson ancestors lived in North
Carolina but are descended from John Edmondson, a
Quaker who settled in Maryland around 1657.
A number of later arriving Edmundsons/Edmondsons
can trace their ancestry to William Edmundson, the
English Quaker evangelist. I am told that the
September 1955 Maryland Historical Society Magazine
states that William always spelled his name
Edmondson but that the spelling was changed to
Edmundson when his journal was edited after his
death. My immediate family has argued over whether
the name should be spelled Edmonson or Edmondson
for well over a century
