This could not possibly be the marriage of Martha Stevens, sister of Gen. Edward Stevens, to the William Edmondson she is supposed by some to have married. The parties are far too old. This might be William, the son of Thomas of Essex, the immigrant. This Martha Stevens was daughter of Edward Stevens, b. about 1662 in Gloucester, and Elizabeth Lane, b. about 1666. Edmondson, the representative of the Edmondson family in South Boston, is a progressive and influentioal businessman, with extensive tobacco interests in the re-drying department, and a leading member of the Cooperative Tobacco Association. He is the son of Major H.A. Edmondson and his wife Sally Owen (Poindexter) Edmondson. (Major Edmondson was the son of Richard and Susan Chastain Edmondson). Major H.A. Edmondson had the following children: Henry Archer Mary Johnson, wife of Edward G. Dorsey Susan Howell, wife of Capt. Henry Edmunds Ann, wife of Joseph Farrell Fanny O’Conner, wife of James M. Faulkner Robert Hurt, married Sarah Glenn Hudman Rosa Lee, wife of A.P. Craddock Lula Howard Elizabeth Archer, wife of Frank Willingham Willie Leander, wife of Thomas Barksdale Johnson Sallie Frank R. Edmondson married Sarah Ridley Green, daughter of Alex R. and Elizabeth Wauhop Green. They have four childrena: Archer and Frank (who are at Alexandria High School) and Elizabeth and Sallie. Mr. Edmondson has one of the handsomest and most perfectly equipped homes in South Boston, from which they extend a lavish hospitality to their many friends and acquaintances. They are staunch members of the Episcopal Church and are reckoned among it most liberal helpers. Mrs. Green, mother of Mrs. Edmondson, having been organist for many years and thrilling with celestial music, is now beyond the zenith of life but still works unswervingly for the church and the music. The Edmondsons have intermarried with so many of the prominent people of Halifax that their kinship is intricate and interesting, and runs in lines reaching through many states. They were not wanting in courage or valor for the Revolutionary Roster contains many of the name and eight fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Lieutenant Robert Edmondson, Sr., fought to his death, Robert Edmondson, Jr., was wounded and Capt. William Edmondson was killed. Andrew, Sr., Andrew, Jr., John and Samuel were privates. We do not know if there is any relationship between those bravest of the brave soldiers and the Edmondsons of Halifax, but we are inclined to think there is. “ (Compiler’s Note: To my knowledge, there is no relationship between the Edmondsons of the Kings Mountain battle and the Edmondsons of Halifax County, Virginia). A genealogy of this family was provided by a descendant, Robin Butler Daviet, in 2004. Jan. 17, 1997. An obituary sent to me by a cousin living in Grants Pass Oregon: Sarah E. Howe, 85, of Grants Pass died Friday, Jan. 17, 1997. She was born Sarah Edmondson on Sept. 14, 1911, in South Boston, Virginia. She married Robert Howe, Jan, 25, 1936, in Washington, D.C.
