(See EFAB No. 42. Information provided by Mrs. Helen Maxwell, Pasadena, Texas). James’ brother Thomas married Polly Haggard, sister of Sarah. James and Thomas were very active in the Baptist church in Kentucky. This brought them into contact with Thomas Boone, a nephew of Daniel Boone of frontier fame. James replaced Thomas Boone as minister of Goshen Baptist Church in 1855. The Ephesus Baptist Church developed not far away, somewhat more liberal than Goshen, and James, his bother Thomas and his son Nathan all shifted to the Ephesus church where they served as minister, deacon and moderator. The 1860 census showed James and Polly Edmonson had a farm valued at $19,270 and personal assets of $8,450. They were moderately prosperous for that time. James died September 9, 1861, age 77. Nathan Edmonson, James’ son of his first marriage, lived on a farm next to his father’s. He married Dullie Fletcher and had two children: Sarah Edmonson, born August, 1846, and Thomas C. Edmonson, born in 1851. This son, Thomas C. Edmonson, and his grandfather’s daughter Amanda, of the second marriage, were both 19 and living next door to each other. They became involved and Amanda became pregnant, leading to a lawsuit brought by Polly Edmonson, Amanda’s mother, charging Thomas. Amanda delivered a child and the two lived as husband and wife. This child was Everett Edward Edmonson, born October 2, 1871. They had two other children, Mary, born about 1874 and Willie, born about 1876. Thomas, obviously a man of low character, then ran off with a woman who was helping his wife during her delivery. This was undoubtedly a tragedy for Thomas Edmonson, a staunch churchman, and was likely a factor in Nathan’s taking his own life two years later, January 23, 1879. Thomas did not return until after his mother’s death when he claimed his half of the family farm. Poor Amanda moved to Missouri with a younger brother, William Edmonson, and settled in Saline County on a farm bought with proceeds from the sale of land in Clark County. In 1877, they sold the Saline County property and moved to a 250 acre place in Dade County, Missouri. Amanda married George Scott who died of typhoid fever in 1884. Amanda died at 33, January 27, 1889. She was buried at Antioch Cemetery, Dade County. The family cemetery in Clark County, Kentucky, was found by Kenneth W. Edmonson, great-grandson of Amanda, on Stoner Creek Road outside the town of Winchester. Headstones show the following: Reverend James Edmonson Polly Edmonson Mar 11, 1785-Sep 9, 1861 Sep 22, 1816-Mar 3, 1895 Nathan Edmonson Dullie Edmonson Sep 2, 1820-Jan 23, 1879 Jun 27, 1820-Dec 6, 1903 Emily Edmonson George M. Edmonson to EFAB and printed in No. 119, April-June, Nov. 17, 1823. William Edmonson and Polly Thomson, daughter of David Thomson, were married. David Thomson gave consent. It appears William Edmonson later married Sarah G. Thomson. David Thomson died in 1850 and is buried in the Thomson graveyard, Wades Mill Road, at the Clark and Montgomery county line. His will, probated July 22, 1850, names three grandchildren: Archibald Edmonson, David Edmonson and Ann B. Hall (Ann Edmonson Hall). He left a 54 acre farm in Montgomery County, KY, cornering on the land of William Edmonson. He left land to Sarah G. Edmondson’s child, Polly Edmonson, and a slave and child to Polly, his granddaughter. The will specifies Archibald, David and Ann B. Hall are half siblings of Polly Edmonson. He was a soldier in the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1782 under the command of his father, Major (and later colonel) William Edmondson, a native of Cecil County, Maryland. His mother was Margaret Montgomery. He raised a company of volunteer riflemen in 1812 and joined the regiment of Col. John Allen. He was killed at the Battle of River Raisin Jan. 22, 1813, and was honored for his heroic death when a county was named for him. His wife is said by some to have been a Montgomery, but a descendant, Katrina Dorneman, provided information to EFAB No. 121 that her brothers were Col. David Robinson and Col. Washington County Deed Book A, p. 65, records an agreement regarding livestock between John Edmonson and Betty _____made in Nelson County. 1790. Patty Edmondson gave consent for her daughter Betsy to marry Joshua Embree. Her husband is evidently deceased at this time. See Orange County, Virginia. Some have said Martha (Patty) Stevens married William Edmundson. I don’t find any proof, suspect her husband was Joseph Edmundson of Orange County. 1792. Patty Edmonson is on the Tax List with 2000 acres. Robert Chandler is on the Tax List. He is her son-in-law. He was born about 1740, was married in Orange County, Virginia, (2-5-1773, by one record. and in 1774, according to a note in the back of Deed Book 17, Orange County, VA) to Susannah Edmondson, b. in 1747. He was a private in the Revolutionary War. Susannah applied for and received a pension (W-8598), 8-22-1839, when she was 92. She gave her marriage date as Feb. 25, three years before the war. Her son Robert gave a statement, 8-22-1839, that his mother’s name before marriage was Edmonson. Susannah said her soldier husband died in 1802 or 1803. Robert, his son, said he died in 1806 or 1807. 1800. The census shows Patty Edmison and James Edmison. May 20, 1802. John and Delany signed with an x and attested the deed in Washington County, not in Indiana. Washington County Deeds C, p. 295. (from BB) 1810. Census shows Susanna Chandler, over 45, with 3 sons and 2 daughters. 1811. Joseph Edmondson is said to have died in this county, leaving estate, a son of ______Edmondson and Patty Stevens Edmondson. 1812. Wilson W. Edmondson, son of William Edmondson, was born in this county. His sister, Sarah A. Edmondson, was born in 1810. She married Green B. Fleece in 1826. Wilson married (1) Pamelia Marshall, 1830, and (2) Mary Felder/Murry, 1838, the latter in Marion County, Kentucky, formed from Washington a few years earlier. He lived in Marion County until his death in 1862. His children were: Wilson, Elizabeth , Cynthia, Alice, Joseph, John, Foster and Caroline. All of them moved to Adams County, Illinois after the Civil War. William Edmondson of Washington County inherited an estate from General Edward Stevens of Culpepper County, Virginia, and was possibly the son of Joseph Edmondson who died in Washington County in 18ll, leaving estate. Joseph was the son of a Mr. Edmondson who married Patty Stevens, sister of Gen. Stevens. . (Some say her husband was William Edmondson, son of Thomas and Grissell Coleman Edmondson of Lunenberg County, VA. I don’t think so. I suspect her husband was Joseph Edmondson of Orange County, Virginia. SWE). 1820. Census shows Susannah Chandler, over 45, living with her son Robert. He was born about 1790 and married Martha W. Nantz, Aug. 26, 1826, in Washington County, daughter of Tavnor Nantz. Susannah Edmonson Chandler, daughter of Patty Stevens Edmonson, and her husband Robert Chandler had: Robert, Sarah, Richard, James, Betsey, Mary, William, John and Edward Chandler. Sarah Chandler m. Edward Chandler m. Leanna. Will Book D, p. 491, and F, 471. (from Beverly Brunelle) 1820? Kentucky Court of Appeals, Deed Book U, p. 532, shows that Gen. Edward Stevens, late of Culpeper County, VA, left property to his wife Gilly and after her death to various people, including the children and heirs of his sister, Patty Edmonson: children of Robert Chandler deceased (Sukey Edmonson’s husband); the children of Joseph Edmonson deceased, John Edmonson, etc. Gilly, or Grissell, Coleman Stevens was the daughter of Robert Spilsby Coleman and Sarah Saunders, and was related to the Grissell Coleman who married Thomas Edmondson of Essex and later Lunenburg County, Virginia. Gilly Coleman Stevens had a sister Ann Coleman who married Samuel Clayton of Culpeper County. Gilly left one sixth of her estate to Samuel’s son, Thomas Clayton (1771-1832). One researcher has stated that William Edmondson, son of Thomas and Grissell, married Martha “Patty” Stevens. Proof is needed. There was a much earlier marriage of Martha Stevens and William Edmondson in Gloucester County, which might be confused with this Martha Stevens. 1825. William Edmondson, second child of John and Esther Anderson Edmondson, was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, in 1800. His family moved to Knox County, KY, in 1801 where William lived until 1825. He transferred title to 113.5 acres in Knox to his brother John B. Edmondson, the day after John received a letter from James Anderson regarding a deeding problem. He moved to Springfield in Washington County, and on Dec. 8, 1831, married Martha Ewing. His signature on the certificate is identical to other known signatures in his letters. The marriage was witnessed by John Saughesy and John C. Riley. One child, Margaret, was born of this marriage in 1834. He sold land to James Ewing (Deeds N, (1836-1840). He soon moved to Bowling Green, Warren County, Ky. See EFAB, No. 123. (This man does not seem to be related to Patty Stevens Edmonson and her family). Index to Deeds, Washington County, shows purchases by William Edmondson: Book H (1822-23) from Polly Scanlan. Book I (1823-27) from Jos. Lester and William Walker. Book J (1827-29), p.99, from James and Sarah Chandler Duke in 1827 just before they moved to Hardin County, Ky. Book K (1829-31) from Stallings and Bearchamp. Book L (1831-33) from Chandler (3 deeds) Book M (1833-36) from Chandler (3 deeds) and Hoagland. (Compiler’s note: The William Edmondson who bought part of this property was probably not William from Knox County). 1850 Census: No Edmondsons in Washington County. Part of Washington County containing Cartwright Creek was included in Marion County about 1835. WAYNE COUNTY. Sept. 9, 1789. Reuben Shores of Wayne County appointed John Jones his lawful attorney for Bond of 9000 pounds of tobacco from Ninian Edmonston. WEAKLY COUNTY. Archibald Edmonston moved from 1822. John Edmondson died leaving a will which devised 140 acres near Providence, Kentucky, to his daughter Hester Ann Edmondson, wife of Houston Woodson. She died before 1871, leaving one child who died in infancy. Under the Statutes of Kentucky at the time, the land descended from the infant Woodson to other descendants of John Edmondson, the child’s grandfather. John enumerated twelve children in his will: 1. Hester Ann Edmondson (who married Houston Woodson). 2. Frances Edmondson 3. Sithy Marlin Edmondson 4. Sarah Imboten Edmondson 5. Margaret Edmondson Cannaday, deceased, leaving issue. 6. Mary J.
