MARTIN COUNTY, N.C.

Early Halifax County included the greater part of Martin County. Martin was formed in 1774 from Halifax which was taken in 1758 from original Edgecombe, taken in 1741 from Bertie. The area of Fishing Creek was settled about 1735, many of the settlers from Virginia. Elegant homes for that time were built by these settlers. Lord Granville kept his rights when the other seven Carolina proprietors gave theirs up in 1729. Land buyers had to deal with his agents and paid quit rents to them as well as taxes to the state. The agents were dishonest and cheated both Granville and the settlers. Howard Edmondson, Falkville, AL, stated the county line between Martin and Edgecombe was changed about 1800, placing the John Edmundson family in Edgecombe. The current county seat is Williamson. The county lies about 60 miles north of New Bern.

In Martin County in 1777:
William Edmondson
Thomas Edmondson

In Martin County in 1779:
Thomas Edmondson
William Edmondson

Will of William Mansell Crisp, Martin County, dated 1783, lists 18 children by his first wife, Sarah Edmondson. Will Book I, p. 107. His daughter Sarah Crisp married an Edmondson and moved to Burke County, N.C., possibly James Edmondson/Edminston who was a juror in 1793. (William Edmundson, editor of Edmondson Family Bulletin for many years, thought the Crisps were Quakers who came to present day Caswell and Person counties. William Crisp bought land from John Watson and paid for it with Virginia currency in old Tyrell County See EFAB, No. 29, No. 93).

In Martin in 1787, N.C. State Census:

Thomas Edmundson, administrator of Randolph Edmundson, sold to Pollard Edmondson of Edgecombe for 492 pounds 7 shillings a negro boy named Peter, about 20 years old and a negro girl Sall about 14. William Edmondson of Edgecombe whose will was probated in 1804 appears to be the son named in Thomas’s will above.

Ann Edmondson, widow of Thomas, is possibly the Ann Edmondson whose will in Edgecombe County in 1820 named a son Pollard.

EDMONDSONS IN EDGECOMBE/NASH/WILSON

Edgecombe County was formed in 1741 and was divided in 1758, the northern section becoming Halifax and the area south of Fishing Creek retaining the name of Edgecombe. This was old St. Mary’s Parish. The western part of the new county became Nash in 1777, including lands lying on tributaries of the Tar River, including Otter (Autry’s) Creek, Bynum’s Mill Swamp Creek, Town Creek, Hart’s Mill Creek, Beech Branch, White Oak Swamp Creek, eastern portion of Fishing Creek, Conetoe Creek, and others. About one sixth of Edgecombe became part of Wilson (after 1833; need date of its formation), lands lying on Cattail Swamp Creek, White Swamp Creek, Toisnant Swamp Creek, Hominy Swamp Creek, Bloomery Swamp Creek, Marsh Swamp Creek and Contentnea Creek. Remaining in present day Edgecombe were lands along the western portion of Fishing Creek, Beaver Dam Creek, Sandy Creek, Swift Creek, Stony Creek, Pig Basket Creek, Sapony Creek, western section of Tar River, Turkey Creek, White Oak Swamp Creek. Most Edmondsons in the bounds of Edgecombe (1758) lived in the area of present day Edgecombe and the section which was cut into Wilson. Ambrose Edmondson of Halifax County bought land in Nash which he sold after he moved to Warren County, Georgia. He lived in Nash in 1790. Most of the Edmondsons lived in Edgecombe. Tarboro is the county seat today.

Johnston County is located across Contentnea Creek from present Wilson County. See Deed Book OO.

She was born in 1762. Place of marriage is not known. James Downing mentions his daughter Lydia Edmondson in his will dated March 17, 1808. John and Lydia settled in Edgecombe County, south of Halifax County, where John died Sept. 3, 1817. Lydia was living in 1820, died in Edgecombe County in 1822.

Their children:
1.       Anna Louisa Edmondson, b. 1782. Did not marry. Died in 1829 in Edge-combe County. Left property to her siblings (Deed Book 19, p. 555.
2.       Mary “Polly” Edmondson, b. 1784, in N.C. Married Noah Little. After his death before 1830, she married Purvis Johnson. They lived in Pickens County, Alabama, in 1834 (DB 22, p. 256, 563?). 3.       Amos E. Edmondson, b. in 1784 in Halifax or Martin County, N.C. Moved to
Sumter District, S.C., about 1803. One account says he married in S.C., to Mary Moody, who is said by her descendant below to have married his brother James). He might have moved to Liberty County, Georgia, for a short time but was in Mississippi by 1812. He was a private in the Mississippi Territorial Militia in 1812, 13th Regiment under Col. Nixon. He signed for 3 months service in Co. E, Francis P. Lenoir’s Mounted Rangers Jan. 6, 1815. He was Private, Sergeant and Captain in Brandon’s Company, Mississippi Territorial Militia, War of 1812. Howard Edmondson states he moved to Butler County, Alabama, after 1830, then to Marshall County, Miss., where they are shown on the 1840 census. Amos’ wife Mary is said by Howard to have died in 1841. Another account says Amos died in Hinds County in 1830. Amos Edmundson who married Mary Glover, June 21, 1843, might be a son.
4.       John Edmondson, b. 1786, in N.C. He sold land from his father’s estate in 1826 and acted as agent for heirs who moved away. He is said to have married Talitha and probably remained in the home area. Edmundsons were living a few miles northeast of Bethel, N.C. in the 1960’s who might be descendants.
5.       Eleanor (Ellender, Nelly) Edmondson, b. in 1786. Married Luke Norris after 1800 and moved to Sumter County, S.C., by 1803. Luke Norris was born in St. Mary’s County, MD, Jan. 3, 1767, son of Joseph Norris. They moved to Covington County, Mississippi Territory, in 1817. Eleanor died in August or September, 1838, in Covington County. Luke died in Sumrall, Covington County, Mississippi. They had William Norris, b. Jan. 10, 1810, in Sumter County, S.C.; Charles S. Norris, b. Oct. 4, 1812, in Sumter County; probably others.

7.       James W. Edmondson, b. 1793, in N.C. He married Mary Moody and was living in Sumter County, S.C. by 1810 when his son James was born there. (Letter from Paul Draughon, Hattiesburg, MS, 1965. See McWhorter Papers, #230, East Carolina University). A deed from John Sullivan to James Edmundson, executed Jan. 20, 1817, and registered Sept. 27, 1819, conveys 200 acres on Poplar Branch for $250, Orangeburg District, S.C. He was living in Orangeburg District, S.C. in 1818 when he sold his interest in land left by his father. He was in St. Matthew’s Parish, Orangeburg, S.C., Census of 1820. He might be the James Edmundson who willed a slave to Eli Edmundson in Fayette County, Georgia, in 1822, possibly on the trek west. He was living in 1830 in Covington County, MS. James W. Edmondson is mentioned in one document in Pickens County, SC. Possibly another man.

Thomas Edmondson, Jr., 1788-1819

Son of John and Lydia Downing Edmondson, Thomas was apparently born in Edgecombe County and lived there all his life. He married Frances Thigpen, daughter of James Thigpen. He took inventory of his father’s estate, Novem-ber 29, 1817, and filed this with the court in 1818. He bought property at the estate sale, Dec. 18, 1817, as reported to Feb. Court, 1818. He bought a slave woman named Tiller for $420 from his sister and brother-in-law Eleanor and Luke Norris, Jan. 5, 1818. He died in 1819, as there was a report of the audit and settlement of the account of his administrator, James Thigpen, to February Court, 1820. He had at least one child. His widow is not listed in the 1820 Census of Edgecombe County, though Lydia Edmondson, his widowed mother, and Orpha Edmondson are listed as heads of household.
Information published in EFAB, No. 9, p. 9, states Thomas and Frances had two children. Their son, John W. (Jack) Edmondson was born in 1816 and was a small boy when his father died. His sister Talitha was born in 1820 after her father’s death. Frances Thigpen Edmondson married James Little, Sept. 5, 1825, and continued to live in Edgecombe County. The 1850 Census states both she and James Little were born about 1798. They had several children in 1850. John and Talitha were heirs of their aunt, Louisa Edmond-son. In the division of her land in 1830, William Thigpen is listed as guardian of “Thomas Edmondson’s heirs” (DB 19, p. 555). A deed Feb. 22, 1841, states John W. Edmondson was an heir of Thomas Edmondson, deceased (DB 23, p. 67).

John W. Edmondson married (1) Elizabeth Cobb, daughter of Kitchen Cobb of Pitt County, N.C. She died in 1842. They had two sons: Thomas Edmondson, born in 1841, and Kitchen, born in 1842. He married (2) Elizabeth Wilkinson, Aug. 19, 1845. They were living in Pitt County in 1850 and moved to Grimes County, Texas, in 1852. They had at least two daughters: Mattie, the older, who married John E. Stuart, and Frances, born 1848, who married Aquilla Bryant Stuart, John’s brother. Mattie is said to have returned to Edgecombe County early in the War years to dispose of family property and returned by sea to Galveston with the money sewn in her skirt.

Talitha Edmondson died April 5, 1842, shortly before she was to be married.
