I am posting a large amount of information on Edmondsons in these early NC counties. Most of those covered are the descendants of Dr. Thomas Edmundson who appeared about 1755 and had come from the Norfolk, Virginia area. His lineage is still a mystery. Efforts to connect him with the Essex County Edmundsons have failed so far. A Y-DNA study by one of his descendants did not match known descendants of Thomas of Essex. Bryant Edmundson of NC who moved to Twiggs County, GA, by 1807, and on to Henry and then Troup County is a descendant. The Edmondsons in Houston County, GA, about 1850 are descendants. I have connected no other early Georgia settlers to this line yet. I am a descendant of Thomas of Essex through Joseph Edmundson who settled in Craven County some miles east of Johnston. I hope this data will help some of you. Stephen W. Edmondson Edmondsons in Johnston, Dobbs, Greene and Wayne Counties, N.C. Johnston County was formed from Craven in 1746. Dobbs was taken from Johnston in 1758. In 1779, the western part of Dobbs became Wayne County. The county seat of Dobbs was moved from Walnut Creek to Kingston, named Kinston in 1784. Dobbs was divided again in December, 1791, into Glasgow and Lenoir and Dobbs ceased to exist. Glasgow was renamed Greene, for Gen. Nathaniel Greene. James Glasgow, a North Carolina Secretary of State, was exposed for fraud in military land grants, prompting the change of county name from Glasgow. Glasgow was renamed Greene before 1800. In 1855, part of Wayne, part of Nash and part of Edgecombe were taken to form Wilson County. (See ANIMAP. (Information provided by Roger D. Hunt, 2007) JOHNSTON COUNTY JOHNSTON COUNTY was taken from the western part of Craven in 1746. It lost land to Dobbs in 1758 which was parent to Wayne (1779), Greene (named Glasgow in 1791 and later named Greene), Lenoir (1791) and part of Wilson (1855). Wake County on its western border was formed in 1771 from part of Johnston, Orange and Cumberland. In 1800, Johnston was bounded by Wake (northwest), Nash (northeast), Wayne (southeast), Sampson (south) and Cumberland (southwest). Oct. 26, 1753. Deed Book 5, p. 432. Earl Granville granted to Thomas Edmundson of Edgecombe County, N.C., 555 acres in Johnston County, beginning on Iveys Branch. Witnesses: James Campbell, Sherwood Haywood. (I suspect this Thomas Edmundson is not Dr. Thomas Edmundson). May 9, 1755. Deed Book 5, p. 195. Earl Granville granted to Thomas Edmundson of Edgecomb County, 400 acres in the Parish of St. Patrick, in Johnston County (later Wayne) on the south side of Great Contentnea on Turner’ s Swamp and Aycock Swamp near Black Creek. Deed Book 5, p. 198. Earl Granville granted to Thomas Woodard of Johnston County, planter, Nov. 9, 1756, 419 acres in the Parish of St. Patrick, Johnston County, on the south side of Contentnea Creek and on the Pocoson Branch and Thomas Grice’s Mill Pond, adjacent to Grice and Thomas Edmundson. 1755. Halifax County Land Grant record, Acct. No. 3080, referred to a grant in Johnston County for 437 acres, adjoining Thomas Edmundson’s land on Contentnea Creek. The grant was surveyed June 5, 1755, and granted Nov. 10, 1757. Thomas Edmundson was a witness. Nov. 10, 1757. Thomas Edmondson is listed as a bounding landowner to Richard Atkinson, Johnston County, St. Patrick’s Parish. This land was on the south side of Contentnea Creek. Other bounding owners: Samuel Peacock, Robert Simms, and Contentnea Creek. Witnesses: Thos. Edmundson and W. Haywood. (Granville Grants, Vol. II, by Hofman). This might be in present Wayne County or close to the border of Wayne. 1762. Edgecombe County Deeds, Book D, p. 364. Thomas Edmundson of Edgecombe County, gentleman, deeded to Jonathan Roberson, planter, April 13, 1771, a 300 acre tract on the north side of Great Contentnea Creek, known by the name of Oakey Neck. This was conveyed to Thomas Edmondson by deed Feb. 1, 1762. This land would lie in present day Wilson County, near the southwestern border of Edgecombe and Wilson and across Contentnea Creek from Wayne and Greene. Deed Book 3, p. 299, describes land owned by Thomas Edmondson near Great Contentnea Creek and the mouth of Troisnant Swamp, bounded by land of James Glasgow. (Another deed, dated Dec. 24, 1777, shows Thomas Edmondson who witnessed a transfer of land owned by James Norris of Edgecombe. Is this Dr. Thomas Edmondson? Deed Book 3, p. 333). Oakland Cemetery, Clayton, Johnston County. (Copied by Chan Edmondson, 1976) James Edmundson February 10, 1826-September 12, 1914 Sue Edmundson February 1, 1841-September 23, 1931 DOBBS COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA This county was formed in 1758 from the eastern portion of Johnston County, formerly a part of Craven County. In 1779, Wayne was cut out of the western part of Dobbs. The county seat of Dobbs was moved from Walnut Creek and located at Kingston, renamed Kinston in 1784. . Lenoir and Glasgow counties were created from Dobbs in December, 1791, and Dobbs ceased to exist. Glasgow became Greene in 1799 after James Glasgow was exposed in military land frauds. 1774. Thomas Edmundson was living in Dobbs County when he sold his 560 acre Granville Grant on Toisnant Swamp in Edgecombe County to his son John Edmundson who was married to Sally. John Edmundson was living in Edgecombe until 1776 when he moved west of Contentnea Creek into Dobbs. 1776. November 25. Battalions raised for aid to State of South Carolina: James Edmonson, Dobbs County, appointed as 2nd Lt. 1778. The loose N.C. Land Grants in the Secretary of State’s Office contain grants to Thomas Edmundson in Dobbs County: 400, 200 and 140 acres. The 140 acre grant appears to be in present day Greene County, west of Contentnea Creek and joining William Speight. 1778. N.C. Colonial Records, Vol. 24, p. 175. Thomas Edmundson is appointed a bridge commissioner with William Speight to construct a bridge over Content-nea Creek. “The bridge is for the public where John Peacock’s bridge has stood for 15 years”. The Act prevents the Peacock family from further abuse of the public through excessive charges and other behavior. The commissioners are to buy the old Peacock Bridge if necessary. Edgecombe County deeds checked by Nancy Taylor of Rocky Mount, N.C. contain references to land on Toisnant Swamp, just north of Contentnea Creek, which prove that Thomas Edmondson moved to Dobbs County and that he had a son John who moved to Dobbs County. A handwritten grantor index for Johnston County covers the period of 1755-1793 and its parts which became Dobbs, came from a book rescued from a fire and preserved on microfilm and published in Wm. Perry Johnston’s THE NORTH CAROLINIAN. The index shows transfers of land from Thomas Edmundson to James Edmundson and from Thomas to John Edmundson. A circle drawn with a radius of five or six miles and centered at Stanton’s Bridge on Contentnea Creek would encompass all these land tracts, including the plantation of James Edmondson at Bullhead on Appletree Creek. 1780 Dobbs County Tax List. Greene County, North Carolina This county was created as Glasgow County from Dobbs County in 1791. Dobbs was formed in 1758 from the eastern portion of Johnston. It was originally a part of Craven County. The name was changed from Glasgow to Greene in 1799. An 1800 map of the state shows Greene bounded on the north by Edgecombe, on the east by Pitt, on the south by Lenoir and on the west by Wayne. 1790 Glasgow County Census. Dobbs was formed in 1758 from the eastern portion of Johnston. In 1800, Wayne was bounded on the north by Edgecombe, on the east by Greene and Lenoir, on the south by Duplin and on the west by Sampson and Johnston. James Edmundson who lived in Wayne County in the late 1700’s was a Revolutionary soldier according to the DAR Lineage Books. He died in 1798, was a Lieutenant in Capt. Shepherd’s Company, First Battalion, North Carolina troops. These troops were raised to help South Carolina. He married Penelope (possibly Stanton, name to be determined). Abstracts of Early Wayne County NC Deeds, by Watson: Deeds 3, p. 55. Nimrod Stradley of Edgecombe deeded to Ethelred Ruffin of Dobbs, July 28, 1781, 217 acres in Wayne County, on both sides of Iveys Swamp, “whereon my mother Jemimah Stradley now lives”, which adjoined Isaac Woodard, S. Grant No. 529 to James Edmondson, Nov. 10, 1784, for 477 acres in Dobbs County on the north side of Nahunta on the fork of Appletree Swamp adjoining Granville’s Line, Abraham Elliss, Elisha Downing, Hardy Yelventon, Micajah Campbell, Samuel Bartlett. Grants were made by N.C. the same day to Hardy Yelverton, citing James Edmundson as a neighbor. (We see Dobbs County still in use, though this land appears to be in the new county of Wayne, though possibly in the part of Dobbs which became Greene). Deeds 2, p. 65. Isaac Woodard of Wayne deeded to John Woodard of Edge-combe, April 2, 1785, 207 acres in Wayne on both sides of Ivey’s Swamp, including the plantation whereon Jemimah Stradley now lives, conveyed by the state to Nimrod Stradley then to Ruffin then to Isaac Woodard. Adjoining landowners included: Isaac Woodard, Samuel Bartlett, Thomas Edmundson, Nimrod Stradley, Sampson Stanton. Deeds 4, p. 511. Thomas Edmondson of Dobbs County, N.C., deeded to Isaac Woodard of Wayne, Feb. 14, 1784, 200 acres in Wayne County on the run of Iveys Swamp, adjoining Outland and said Woodard, the tract lately granted by the state to said Edmondson. (Again, we see Dobbs used. Was Thomas in the part of Dobbs which survived until 1790 and became Greene and Lenoir?) Deed Book 4, p. 514. Ethelred Ruffin of Dobbs County deeded to Isaac Woodard of Wayne, Feb. 14, 1784, 217 acres in Wayne, lying on both sides of Iveys Swamp adjoining said Isaac Woodard, Samuel Bartlett, Doctor Edmundson, Nimrod Stradley, Sampson Stanton and Thomas Edmundson, including the plantation on which Jemimah Stradley now lives, conveyed by Nimrod Stradley to Ruffin. (It is not clear whether the deed mistakenly repeats the name of Thomas Edmundson or whether two pieces of Edmundson land adjoined the property. However, the deed would seem to refer to only one Edmundson owner). State Census, 1784-87. No records have survived for Wayne County. Deeds 5, p. 381. James Edmundson deeded to Jimimah Hill of Wayne, June 25, 1785, 300 acres on the north side of the run of Appletree Swamp, adjoining said Edmundson and Elisha Downing and another 23 acres on the Swamp adjoining Hardy Yelverton, Bartlett and Edmundson. Hill & wife Winneford, Lemuel Hill & wife Debora and Hubbard Edmundson, of said county, respectfully showeth unto your honor that Calvin Edmundson of the County of Wayne deceased, was in his lifetime, and at the time of his death seized in fee simple, or of some other good estate, of inheritance to him and his heirs, of the following tracts of land—a tract of land in Green County adjoining the lands of Geo. Thompson and others containing about one hundred ninety three acres—a tract of land in Wayne County adjoining the lands of Burwell Shadding and William J. Exum, containing about one hundred and ten acres—one other tract in Wayne County adjoining the lands of George Thompson and William P. Taylor containing about one hundred and eighty one acres. All which said lands are situate, lying and being in the counties of Wayne & Green 1866. Sarah M. Edmundson and Patrick Coley were married in Wayne, Dec. 9. 1868 Will of William B. Edmondson, Will Book 14, p. 649. Sept. 10, 1881. Wayne County. Edmondson. Revised July, 2006. Dr. Thomas Edmondson of Edgecombe, Johnston and Wayne Dr. Thomas Edmundson’s place of birth and his residence before he appears in the records of North Carolina in the 1750’s have not been discovered. He might be the man mentioned in Suffolk County, Virginia, who was paid by the vestry for keeping the widow Green. He had two known sons, documented in land records in North Carolina: John Edmundson who married Sally and lived in Edgecombe and Dobbs Counties. James Edmundson who married Penelope and lived in Wayne County. John Edmundson, Son of Dr. Thomas Edmundson A deed in Edgecombe County in 1774 shows the sale of a 560 acre Granville grant on Toisnant Swamp by Dr. Thomas Edmundson to his son John. Dr. Edmundson was living in Dobbs County at the time. In 1776, John and his wife Sally sold the Edgecombe property and moved across Contentnea Creek into Dobbs (later Wayne and Greene). The 1790 Census of Greene County, N.C. shows in residence #30 the household of John Edmundson. The family included three males over 16, two males under 16, 5 females all ages and 3 slaves. Though John is not shown in the 1800 census of Greene, he was witness to the will of Shadrick Braswell, March 26, 1806, signing in bold wavy hand. At probate in 1820, William Edmundson had to prove John’s signature. John Edmundson married Sarah. They had these children: 1. RICHARD EDMUNDSON, b. ; married Elizabeth. Richard Edmundson of Greene County bought two tracts of land in Wayne County in 1796. He died by May, 1810. His estate was administered by Joseph Hollowell, Sr., who might have been the greatest creditor of the estate. A year’s allowance was provided to the widow and the estate’s only Edmundson buyer other than Elizabeth was William Edmundson. The estate papers mention no minor children though a cradle is mentioned in the estate sale. The will of Edith (Edeph) Branch, dated December 4, 1808, in Duplin County, names her grandson Richard Edmundson as a legatee. It would appear then that Elizabeth, wife of Richard, was Elizabeth Branch. Elizabeth Edmundson is listed as head of household in Wayne County in the census of 1820 and 1830. 2. PATSY EDMUNDSON, b. August 10, 1770. Bible record shows she was the daughter of John and Sarah Edmundson (Dobbs County Bible Records, Vol. II, by Murphy). She married John Blow (first wife). Named as heir of Edith Branch. 3. WILLIAM EDMUNDSON, b. ca 1775. Probably the William Edmundson shown in the 1820 and 1830 censuses of Greene County. He appears to have died by 1840. His estate settlement in 1844 shows Haywood Edmundson and Lawrence Bryan as executors. (Greene County Estate Records, 1839-1845, by Murphy). Named as an heir in the will of Edith Branch, 1808. 4. JAMES EDMUNDSON, born about 1780. The James Edmundson, age 70, in the 1850 Census of Greene County, living with Edwin Speight, is probably this man. He has no demonstrable connection to any other Edmundson family. James was witness to the will of his sister Nancy Edmundson Blow in 1820 and is identified as her brother in the will. Named in will of Edith Branch, 1808. 5. JOHN EDMUNDSON, b. 1787. Named in will of Edith Branch, 1808. The Census of Wayne County in 1850 shows a John Edmundson, age 63, with wife Smithy and nine children. See account below. 6. NANCY EDMUNDSON, m. John Blow (2nd wife). Nancy Blow is named in the will of Edith Branch, 1808. Her noncupative will dated 16 August, 1820, and probated in February Court, 1821, named sons Morris and James and daughters Silvany, Cecion, and Prissy. William and James Edmundson state that Nancy Blow is their sister (Abstracts of Wayne County Wills 1780-1868, by Carolina Abstractors. 7. EDIPH EDMUNDSON, m. John Lane (Lain) who died in 1820 leaving widow Edith and eight children, six of whom are minors. Ediph Lain is an heir in will of Edith Branch, 1808. A court case, Bynum vs. Thompson, 1840, states that Edith Lane and her two youngest sons were living in Houston County, Georgia, in 1837. 8. POLLY (Mary) EDMUNDSON is listed in will of Edith Branch in 1808. 9. SALLY EDMUNDSON is listed in 1808 in the will of her grandmother, Edith Branch. She is probably the Sally Edmundson who married Matthew Jinnett. The Wayne County Census of 1850 lists Sarah Jinnett, age 53, with children Anna, 25; Elva, 19; Matthew, 17; John, 21. (Vertical File, Wayne County Library, and CONTENTNEA MARRIAGES, by Perkins). 10. SMITHY EDMUNDSON is named in the will of her grandmother, Edith Branch, in 1808. John Edmundson (1787- ) John Edmundson, son of John and Sarah Edmundson, was born in N.C., probably in Wayne or Greene County. His wife was Smithy, daughter of Noah Yelverton. He is probably the John Edmondson listed in the 1830 Census and the John Edmundson in the 1840 Census. John G. Edmundson who deeded two tracts of 103 acres each in Wayne County to Jason Yelverton, registered in 1840 and 1841, would appear to be a different person as he is listed as John G. in the 1840 Census with John Edmundson in a different household. John is listed in the 1850 Census of Wayne, 63, farmer, with wife Smithy, 60, and children: William, 30; Wright, 22; Edieth, 37; Paisey, 34; Laney, 24; Elizabeth, 22; Smithy, 16; Wiley, 28; Richard, 27. John appears to have died or moved before the 1860 Census of Wayne. The will of Smithy Edmundson, probably Smithy Yelverton Edmundson and not her daughter, dated 1863, is found in Wayne, D-14, p. 424. Children of John and Smithy: 1. Warren Edmundson (Census of 1840, Wayne) 2. Edieth Edmundson, b. about 1813 3. Paisey Edmundson, b. about 1816. 4. William Edmundson, b. about 1820. 5. Stephen Edmundson (Census of 1840, Wayne). 6. Lemon (Leamon) Edmundson, b. 1822. (Census of 1850, Wayne) 7. Wiley Edmundson, b. about 1822. 8. Laney Edmundson, b. about 1826. 9. Richard Edmundson, b. about 1827. 10. Wright Edmundson, b. about 1828. 11. Elizabeth Edmundson, b. about 1828. 12. Smithy Edmundson, b. about 1834. James Edmondson, Son of Dr. Thomas Edmundson James Edmondson, son of Dr. Thomas Edmondson and brother of John Edmondson, was apparently born in N.C. (Some have identified his father to be Joseph Edmondson of Craven County. No proof exists for this. James Edmondson, son of Joseph and Priscilla Edmondson, died in 1766, leaving a widow Aliss and no known children. See Craven County Wills and Estates, A-E). James Edmondson was owner of a 1500 acre plantation in Dobbs County at the outset of the Revolution, south of Nahunta Swamp, which became northern Wayne County and southern Greene County. James was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the Second Battalion of volunteers to be raised for the aid of South Carolina. He served in the Revolution. A family legend tells of an incident late in the War when General Lord Cornwallis marched through the area by way of Peacock’s Bridge on his way to Yorktown. As the British troops approached the Edmundson plantation, the family turned out a large bull. The sight of the redcoats put the bull into a frenzy. The soldiers killed him, skinned him in the front yard, took the beef and hung the bull’s head to a large ash tree with spikes found in the blacksmith shop near the house. The plantation became known as Bullhead, as did the township. James and Penelope Stanton Edmundson had twelve children. His will, dated after 1796 and probated in April Court, 1799, was abstracted by Nancy Edmondson of Rocky Mount, N.C., a descendant. The complete will is recorded in Wayne County N.C. Wills, 1796-1807, Vol. IV, pp. 40-41, North Carolina Department of Archives and History. Lastly, I nominate my son John Edmundson, John Sherrard and Benjamin Fort whole and sole Executors of this my last will and Testament hereby revoking and disannuling all former wills by me. Witnessed by Levi Lancaster, Wright Sanders and Anna (her mark) Weber. James Edmundson was about 47 years of age when he died. Though his burial occurred in this area, a marker was placed in commemoration years later in the Hillview Cemetery in LaGrange, Troup County, Georgia, by his descendants, near that of his son Bryant and Bryant’s wife Smitha: “Lt. James Edmundson, 1751 N.C. 1798 N.C.” Penelope Stanton Edmundson lived until 1818. Though she is not listed on the census of Wayne in 1810, she is shown as Penny Edmundson in the 1810 Census. Upon her death, the two youngest sons sold remaining personal property. The “Inventory and Account of the Sale of the Balance of the Property of James Edmundson, dec., June 6, 1818, showed a yield from the sale of $1550, including three slaves. Buyers included Cullen Edmundson, Wright Edmundson, Penelope Edmundson, Jr., Stephen Braswell, Theos. Edmundson, John Edmundson, William Morris, James Skipper, Henry Edwards, Sally Edmund-son, James Bryan, John Blow, Peter Wooten and Benjamin Lane. Buyers were a mixture of the families of James and Penelope Edmundson and John and Sarah Edmundson. Children of James and Penelope Edmundson: 1. John Edmundson, born December 15, 1771. Account follows. 2. Cullen Edmundson, born July 15, 1775. Moved to Tennessee. Account follows. 3. Bryant Edmundson, born in 1782. Moved to Georgia. Account follows. 4. Martha Edmundson, born in 1787. Laney Edmundson. Married James Bryant. He was at the estate sale in 1818. 7. Burwell Edmundson who probably married Sally Taylor, reportedly his second wife. (Nancy Edmondson Taylor says he did not marry Patsy Mooring and she doubts he married Sally Taylor). 8. Penelope Edmundson, born about 1790. According to a descendant, Peggy Edmundson Tetley, she had illegitimate children whose father was alleged to be Thomas Person. She is shown in the 1818 estate sale as “Penelope Edmundson, Jr.” She is probably the Penelope Edmundson in the Census of 1820, Wayne County, white female age 16-45, with 3 females 0-10 years old. She is not listed in later censuses of Wayne. She is named in deeds and witnessed a will in 1822 and 1828. She was in court in 1825-26 with two illegitimate children whom she alleged were fathered by Thomas Person. (Bastardy Bonds for Thomas Edmundson and Malviney Edmundson, Nov. 30, 1825, and Mar. 31, 1826). A deed in 1826 refers to her as “Penelope Edmundson, planter”. She had left the county in 1830 and appears to have moved to Arkansas as the 1850 Census of Arkansas, age 60, shows Penelope living in the household of Theophilus Edmundson, born March 10, 1828, and Patience Edmundson, born about 1818. Thomas, brother of Theophilus, lived in a neighboring town. All were born in N.C. Family legend says Theophilus and Thomas travelled from N.C. to Mississippi to Arkansas before 1850. The-ophilus was Peggy Tetley’s great-great-grandfather. 9. Pearcy Edmundson, born March 4, 1793. Married William Morris in 1814, son of Zechariah and Margaret Charles Morris. He was at the estate sale in 1818. They were Quakers and moved to Parke County, Indiana, about 1830. Pearcy died October 11, 1854, at Coloma, Indiana, and is buried at Rocky Run burying ground. . Their children: Jeremiah Morris, b. Feb. 2, 1815; Peggy A. Morris, b. Sept. 16, 1816; Mary Jane Morris, b. Jan. 10, 1818; Betsy Morris, b. Feb. 21, 1819; James Edmundson Morris, b. June 30, 1821; William C. Morris, b. Dec. 16, 1822; Zecariah Morris, b. Dec. 16, 1824; Wright Morris, b. March 1, 1826; Thomas Morris, b. Oct. 30, 1827; Mary N. Morris, b. March 26, 1829; Mordicai Morris, b. Jan. 18, 1831; Pearcy Morris, b. June 14, 1832; Polly J. Morris, b. ?; Pennie Morris, b. April 12, 1838. ( Nancy Taylor of Rocky Mount, N.C., conclusively proved that Pearcy did not marry Erastus Ham as some records show. Ham married another Pearcy who was younger.) 10. Elizabeth Edmundson. Married (1) William ? Miller; (2) John Ivey; (3) James Skipper. Skipper was at the estate sale in 1818. 11. Theophilus Edmundson, b. about 1795. Married Clarkey Sauls. Account follows. 12. Wright Edmundson, b. June, 1796. He was at the estate sale in 1818. He appears in the Census of 1820 for Edgecombe County, a white male between the ages of 16-26, with 1 wm 0-10; 1 wm 0-10; 1 wf 26-45. A Bible record in Turner’s HISTORY OF EDGECOMBE COUNTY NC appears to be his. The history states he was son of Theophilus and Penelope Edmundson, his father’s name almost certainly an error. Wright died December 24, 1860. He married Susanna Dickenson, April 6, 1817. The two children shown in the census of 1820 would fit the two older children listed in the Bible. Account follows. John Edmundson (1771-1853) John Edmundson was eldest son of James and Penelope Stanton Edmundson of Wayne County, N.C. He was born December 15, 1771, and had reached adult years at the time of his father’s death. According to Eleanor Bizzell Powell, her ancestor John Edmundson studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and was one of the earliest physicians to practice in Wayne County. His first wife was Elizabeth, daughter of James and Elizabeth Jordan. They married before 1802 (See Deed Book 7-412). Five known children were born of this marriage. They are: 1. James Edmundson. Went to Texas. 2. Turner Edmundson. Went to Texas. 3. Winifred Edmundson, born in 1795 and married Wiley Jones in 1812. She died in 1877. 4. Mary Edmundson. Born in 1813. Married Thomas Aldridge in 1834. He was born in 1811, son of Drewry Adridge, Jr., and Edith Hardy Aldridge. Thomas Aldridge was politically active and named sons after political leaders of the time. Mary was blonde, queenly and unusual in her ability to make money. During the War Between the States, she made several trips to Confederate positions in Virginia to assist her sons during illness and to claim their bodies when killed. When Sherman’s army invaded North Carolina in 1865, Scho-field’s troops took all the meat and horses and threatened to burn her house. Drunken scavengers threatened to harm her young son, born of her second marriage. Officers who saw the quality of shirts she made engaged her to make shirts for them, with which she earned funds to buy a good new horse. Thomas Aldridge died in 1847. Mary married Starling Bass Taylor with whom she had one son, Octavius “Dock” Taylor. Children of Thomas and Mary Edmundson Aldridge: (1) Louisa Aldridge, born 1835; married John H. Aldridge and died in 1893. (2) Vicey J. Aldridge , born in 1837 and married John Wooten, 1817-1886. (3) John Tyler Aldridge, born in 1840 and died in 1864 at Germany’s Ford (his body was brought back to be buried at Jason by his mother and sister Vicey Wooten in the winter of 1864-65). (4) James Polk Aldridge, born in 1843 and died at Chancellorsville on the day Gen. Jackson was shot (Mary retrieved his coffin several months later for burial at Jason. (5) Winifred C. Aldridge, born in 1845, married John Henry Sugg and died in 1911. 5. John Jackson Edmundson, born in 1822. He married (1) Mary Taylor in 1847 and (2) Susan Jones. Account follows. Dr. John Edmundson married (2) Sallie Taylor in 1820. She died in 1822 according to DAR record. (Nancy Edmondson Taylor knows of no proof that she married John’s brother Burrell and was Burrell’s widow when she married John). Dr. John Edmundson married (3) Vicey Jordan Parks, daughter of Frederick and Winifred Jordan and first cousin of his first wife Elizabeth, in 1832. Vicey was born October 1, 1778, and married John Parks. A Marriage Contract in 1832 (Deed Book 15, p. 393) showed her as the widow Vicey Parks. She died August 20, 1842 and is buried at Bullhead Plantation. He practiced medicine in Stantonburg, N.C. and is shown in the 1850 Census of Greene County, age 76, living with an overseer and with a Dr. Peacock. He died November 11, 1853. He is buried beside his second wife Vicey in the Bullhead Community, his grave marked with a stone. The inscription shows he died Nov. 14, 1852, age 82. His wife Vicy’s stone shows she was born October 1778 and died August 20, 1842, in her 64th year. John Jackson Edmundson (1822- ? ) John Jackson Edmundson, son of Dr. John Edmundson and Elizabeth Jordan Edmundson, was born Dec. 10, 1822 in Greene County. He died Dec. 21, 1872, and is buried in Greene County (tombstone). He married Mary S.Taylor in 1847. She was born March 22, 1828, daughter of Kinchen and Winnifred Taylor. She died March 23, 1857 (tombstone in Greene County). John J. and Mary had: (1) William Edmundson, b. 1850 (2) Andrew Edmundson, b. Jan. 23, 1852 and died March 3, 1905 (tombstone). Married Mattie H. Hodges. She was born July 24, 1866 and died Oct. 14, 1911 (tombstone in Greene County). They had five sons and two daughters. John Jackson Edmundson married (2) Susan Jones. They had: (1) Mary Edmundson. (2) Edward Edmundson. (3) Frank Edmundson. (4) John Edmundson. John Jackson Edmundson is buried in Greene County, across the paved road from the grave of his father, Dr. John Edmundson. Cullen Edmundson (1775-1836) Cullen Edmundson, second son of James and Penelope Edmundson, was born July 17, 1775, and died June 24, 1836. He is listed in the Census of 1800 in Wayne County but not in later censuses of Wayne. He married Margaret Cannon Mooring, widow of Henry Mooring. Henry Mooring was son of William Mooring and Priscilla (Celey) Edmundson. Cullen and Margaret were married in 1810, about four years after Henry’s death. The family is shown in the 1820 Census of Greene County: 2 males 16-18; 2 males 18-26; 1 male 45 +; 1 female 0-10; 1 female 45 +. Most of the children were the Mooring children of Margaret’s first marriage. The family moved to Madison County, Tennessee. Cullen and Margaret had one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Edmundson, and possibly others. Several of the Mooring sons moved to Caddo Parish, Louisiana, near Shreveport, and established Mooringport on the Red River. Elizabeth Ann Edmundson married Matthew Goodrich Jackson, son of Zebulon Jackson and his wife Mary Ann Goodrich of York County, S.C. Bryant Edmundson (1782-1855) Third child of James and Penelope Edmundson of Wayne County, NC, Bryant moved to Twiggs County, Georgia, where family tradition states his oldest child, Louisa, was born in 1807. He was Justice of the Peace in Lawson’s District, Militia District 324, in 1812. The Tax Digest for 1818 shows Bryant W. Edmundson living in Captain Hodges’s District, owner of 202 ½ acres, 101 ½ acres and 101 ½ acres, with three slaves. Tax was $2.32. The Tax Digest for 1826 listed no Edmundsons. Mail was advertised for Bryant at Marion Post Office, Jan. 1, 1828. The family moved to Henry County in 1826 and in 1828 moved farther west to Mountville in Troup County. He owned over 1000 acres of land and had 9 slaves shown in the 1840 census. He died March 27, 1854, in DeKalb County, Georgia, and was buried first near his wife Smitha Williams Edmundson in the Edmundson Cemetery on Salem Road. Smitha was born in 1780 in N.C. and died May 22, 1837. The graves were moved many years later to the family cemetery plot in the City Cemetery in LaGrange. Their children: 1. Louisa Edmundson, b. 1807 in Georgia. She married Abraham Peavy (b. 1808 in Georgia) January 13, 1828, in Henry County. He died June 8, 1846. She married (2) Samuel Walker, August 2, 1848, in Troup County. 2. William L. Edmundson who married Sarah Jane Rakestraw in 1838 in Troup. 3. Mary Edmundson who married Edmund T. Belcher, June 6, 1837, in Troup. 4. Jane Edmundson who married Robert Golden, May 11, 1837, in Troup. 5. Sarah Edmundson 6. Wiley Stanton Edmundson, b. 1812, and married Dec. 1, 1836, Mary Ann Hardin, daughter of John Hardin and Sarah Elizabeth Spivey Hardin. Mary Ann was born June 27 1816. 7. Penelope Edmundson who married Richmond R. Kendrick, Nov. 21, 1833, in Troup. 8. Henry Edmundson 9. Naomi Edmundson 10. Bryant William Edmundson, Jr., born 1820 in Georgia and married Elizabeth Antoinette Kimbrough, Dec. 28, 1839, in Harris County. 11. Matilda Edmundson who married James E. Peavy, Dec. 14, 1837. Members of this family were quite prominent in Troup County for generations. Theophilus Edmundson (1795-1824) Theophilus was the fourth son of James and Penelope Edmundson of Wayne County. He was born in 1795. He married Clarkey Sauls, daughter of John Sauls and Nancy Braswell Sauls. He was at the estate sale in 1818 and is shown in the census of 1820 in Wayne County with two males 0-10. He died in 1824. Guardianship papers are very complete on this family, Nancy Edmondson Taylor states. Barna, a male child, was dropped from the list of heirs before the division of the estate. Clarkey remained in N.C. and might be the “Charity” Edmundson shown in the Census of 1830. Clarkey Edmundson is listed in the 1850 Census, age 52, living with Chelly Edmundson, 22, and Nancy, 90, the latter probably her mother, Nancy Braswell Sauls. Their children probably include: 1. Bryant Edmundson, born about 1816. He moved to Houston County, Georgia, by 1837. The 1850 Census shows him living in the Haynesville District. He married Martha Johnson, Feb. 11, 1851, in Houston County. Bryant is shown in the 1860 Census of Houston County. He was born in N.C., was a farmer with $6000 property and had children: Theophelus, 8, and Laura, 6. Their mother had apparently died. Bryant is sometimes confused with his uncle, Bryant Edmundson of Troup County, Georgia, who died in 1854. A relative, Edith Edmundson Lane, widow of John Lane, moved to Houston County about the same time Bryant settled there. A suit between Bynum and Thompson ment-ions her living there with her two sons. 2. Burwell Edmundson, born June 13, 1818, was second son of Theophilus and Clarkey and was one of the two young males counted in the 1820 census of Wayne County in their household. He married Nancy Smith, daughter of Henry Smith and Sarah Parks Smith. He died June 10, 1894. Nancy Edmondson Taylor who contributed much material and advice for this compilation is a descendant. Account follows. 3. Chelly Edmundson, born about 1828, married John Scarboro, Sept. 1, 1851. A year earlier she was living in her mother’s household, stated to be 22 (census of Wayne County). She died August 9, 1881. 4. Barna, died in infancy before the division of the estate. These children are listed in Land Division Records, Wayne County, N.C. and Wayne County N.C.. Guardians Bonds, 1824-1826. C.103.50028. Wright Edmundson (1796-1860) The youngest son of James and Penelope Edmundson, Wright was born June 20, 1796 in Wayne County. He was at the 1818 estate sale. He is shown in the 1820 Census of nearby Edgecombe County, near Contentnea Creek, the bound-ary. He was between the years of 16-26, with 1 male 0-10; 1 female 0-10; 1 female 26-45. He appears to be the person referred to in the HISTORY OF EDGECOMBE COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA, by Turner. This history gives the entries in the Wright Edmundson family Bible. The history refers to him as the son of Theophilus and Penelope Edmundson. His father’s name appears to be an error unless James Edmundson was also called Theophilus. The Bible says Wright was born in June, 1796, and died Dec. 24, 1860. He married Susanna Dickinson, April 6, 1817. She was the daughter of Shadrach Dickinson and Keziah Simms Dickinson. The ages of his two oldest children agree with the 1820 census record. Nancy Taylor says he lived in his later years on the north side of Contentnea Creek in Edgecombe in what became Wilson County. Deeds in Wayne refer to Wright Edmundson of Edgecombe County and to land north of Nahunta Swamp and south of Appletree Swamp. The Bible lists: 1. Rufus W. Edmundson, January 21, 1818. 2. Elizabeth Jane Edmundson, November 16, 1819. 3. Garry Edmundson, August 26, 1821. 4. Zilla Edmundson, April 1, 1823. 5. James P. Edmundson, February 10, 1825. 6. Martha Edmundson, April 28, 1827. 7. Sarah Edmundson, November 29, 1828. 8. Penelope, Edmundson, September 16, 1831. 9. Edwin Gray Edmundson, September 17, 1832. 10. Susan Wright Edmundson, November 8, 1834. Rufus W. Edmundson, born January 21, 1818, married (1) Caroline Wilder and (2) Ann Exum. Was he the Rufus Edmundson in Abilene, Texas, who stated he and his family migrated from Snow Hill, N.C. to Texas in 1834? Elizabeth Jane Edmundson, born November 16, 1819, married Redmond Petway. Garry Edmundson, born August 26, 1821, married Sarah Simms. Zilla Edmundson, born April 1, 1823, died August 2, 1895. James P. Edmundson, born Feb. 10, 1825, married Susan Harrison McLean. Martha Edmundson, born April 28, 1827, married John Sanders. Sarah Edmundson, born Nov. 29, 1828, married William Quarles. Penelope Edmundson, born Sept. 26, 1831, married Joel A. Tynes. She died Oct. 8, 1928. Burwell Edmunson (1818- ) Burwell Edmundson, son of Theophilus and grandson of James Edmundson, was born in Wayne County, N.C., June 13, 1818. He is shown in the 1820 Census, under ten, in the household of Theophilus Edmundson. He died June 10, 1894 He married Nancy Smith, daughter of Henry Smith and Sarah Parks Smith. He is shown in the 1850 Census of Wayne County: Burwell Edmunson, 32, b. in N.C.; Nancy, 33, wife, b. in N.C.; Henry, 2, born in N.C.; Theophily, son, born Dec. 1, 1849. (Information on descendants of Theophilus and Clarkey Sauls Edmundson provided by Nancy Edmundson Taylor) James Calvin Edmundson (1812-1869) James Calvin Edmundson was born in 1812 on the Wayne-Greene County line. He married Harriet Ham who was born in 1812. His mother was Elizabeth, shown in the 1820 Census of Wayne County, N.C., head of household with two male children under 10, and in the 1830 Census.
