SARAH EDMUNDSON AND DESCENDANTS
(Thomas-1)
Sarah, one of the two known daughters of Thomas Edmundson who died in 1715, married James Boughan, eldest son of Maj. James Boughan of Essex County. See Land Trials, 1741-1760, p. 115, for information on a jury trial March 15, 1747, which makes clear James Boughan and John Boughan were sons of Maj. James Boughan. The Boughans owned considerable land along Piscataway Creek, some of which was in litigation for many years after Maj. Boughan’s death. James Boughan’s sister Elizabeth was married to Benjamin Fisher.
Sarah’s name appears in a number of documents in the early 1700’s.
Though no sure date is known, she and James were married probably 1704-5 as their first son was born about 1706. Sarah was almost certainly the daughter of Thomas Edmondson and Mary, his second wife. The will of John Edmondson, son of Thomas, dated Jan. 22, 1733, named his sister, Sarah Boughan (Broughan), Essex County Will Book 5, pp. 116-197).
The will of her husband, styled James Boughan, Senr, was dated Nov. 21, 1721. He was “very sick and weak of body” at the time. He named his wife Sarah and his son James Boughan executors. The will names all five known sons and provides for their schooling, indicating all were still being schooled. No daughter is known. It is interesting that he did not name his eldest son as an executor. Sarah and James had:
1.       John Boughan, specified as the eldest in the will, was born about 1706. He married Cary Caston, daughter of Class Caston and Cary Farguson. John entered suit against his cousin Augustine Boughan in 1732 for property left to him in his grandfather Boughan’s will, including a water grist mill. He won the property only to have it reclaimed in 1747 by Augustine in another suit. John sued again in 1751 and won. His will dated Aug. 1, 1769, was probated Sept. 16, 1776. His wife Cary died in Nov. 1784. He named children: John Boughan, b. ~ 1743; Major Boughan, b. ~ 1748; Cary Boughan, b. ~ 1745; Elizabeth Boughan. Mary, a third daughter, married Richard Burnett. Cary, single in 1769, married John Turner. Elizabeth, single in 1769, married William Howard.
2.       James Boughan, named with his brother John in their grandfather Major James Boughan’s will in 1711. Important property was left first to James and if he left no children to his brother John. James died young without heirs. The property was appropriated by their father and sold soon after 1711 to his brother, another John Boughan whose only son Augustine inherited it. Suits went on for many years over title.
3.       Abner Boughan
4.       Thomas Boughan
5.       Benjamin Boughan. Living in Charlotte County, VA, in 1767.

James Boughan Senr died soon as his will was proved in court June 19, 1722 by Sarah and son James, executors. Sarah was living in 1734 when her property was mentioned in a deed.
(See numerous documents compiled by Beverly Brunelle on the Boughans).

Major James Boughan’s son John married Susannah Lee. They had:
1.       Mary Boughan, born before 1720. Married John Edmondson, brother of Sarah Edmondson and son of Thomas Edmondson who died in 1715. She was probably John’s second wife, his first being Elizabeth Johnson, daughter of William Johnson with whom he had at least one son William Edmondson named in Johnson’s will. Mary and John had one known child, Susannah or Sukey. Mary was pregnant when John made his will. John’s will, dated Jan. 22, 1733, directed that if both his children by Mary died without issue, one third of his estate would go to Augustine Boughan and two thirds to the children of his brother Samuel Edmundson. (It appears the son William Edmundson had died). John left legacies to his brother Thomas Edmundson and others. His will was probated Jan. 22, 1733. The widow Mary Boughan Edmundson married Gabriel Jones soon thereafter. She had no second child known to have survived. She and Jones had several children: Lucy, Jeane, Elizabeth, Dorothy, Gabriel. Jones was made guardian of Susannah Edmundson March 21, 1743, a bond for 1000 pounds sterling made by Gabriel Jones, Augt. Boughan, and Francis Attwood. Will Book 7, pp. 107-108.
2.       Augustine Boughan, only son.
3.       Dorothy Boughan who married William Worthaine.
John Boughan’s will was dated Feb. 13, 1719. Mary was to receive a share of the slaves when she came of age. The will was proved July 19, 1720.
The widow Susannah Lee Boughan married Thomas Bryant. In her will Jan. 30, 1725, she left a gold ring to her daughter Mary Boughan.

(Is Boughan pronounced Bowan or Bone?)
