I will post below the first part of a history of Joseph Edmundson from whom I descend. Additional material will be posted next.

JOSEPH EDMUNDSON (1680’s-1743) AND DESCENDANTS
(THOMAS-1)

Joseph is probably a son of Thomas Edmundson and his second wife, Mary (Mary Haile?). His birthdate is likely in the 1680's.

Joseph Edmundson is mentioned in the will of Francis Brown, Sr., of South Farnham Parish, Rappahannock County, dated 10 November, 1690, and proved February 3, 1691, as Brown’s godson. Brown was a close neighbor of the Edmundsons in Rappahannock County (soon to become Essex). John Edmundson, Francis Brown, son of Daniel Brown, Sr., and Francis Graves, son of Francis Graves, dec., are other godsons, each to receive a pocket Bible of five or six shillings cost (Wills of Rappahannock County, 1656-92). He received bounty money Nov. 12, 1698, for a wolf’s head. He witnessed a deed of sale of land by John Haile in Essex County, 10 July 1703 with his brother James (Deed Book 11, p. 29). He witnessed a land lease 9/10 November, 1706, in Essex from Richard West of St. Anne’s parish, Essex, to Edward Mosely and Benjamin Moseley, church wardens of St. Anne’s Parish, on behalf of the parishioners of the parish (Deeds and Wills, #13, 1707-1711, by Dorman).
Joseph Edmundson witnessed a deed from Richard Long to Nicholas Ware, May 14, 1713 (Essex County Deeds and Wills, 1711-1716, No. 14). Richard Long was of St. Mary’s Parish, Essex County, and Nicholas Ware lived near Edward Gresham south of Dragon Swamp and married Elizabeth Gresham. They named one son Edward. Nicholas Ware, Jr., was of Stratton Major Parish, King and Queen County. The land was 171 acres in St. Mary’s Parish, Essex County, bounding Sameul Elliott, John Buckner, John Long and William Harrison. Other witnesses were: William Corrington, Jr. and James Anderson. (From Anne Kemp, 2005).

Joseph is named in the will of Thomas Edmundson, money in the hands of Richard Lee and others being left to him and his brother James. He appears to have moved to N.C. after 1713 and to be living there at the time Thomas’s will was proved.
He witnessed a deed in Craven Precinct, Bath County,NC, in 1714, for Enoch Wards and Martin Frank, land on the north side of the Neuse River. He is the earliest Edmondson known to have settled in N.C. He married twice. His first wife’s name is not known. An interesting item obtained by Lee Edmundson from researcher Suzanne Derieux in 2005 found in Essex County records shows:
Order Book 5, p. 93. 18 Sep. 1717. Petition of Joannah Smith. Benjamin Edmundson came into court and engaged to make satisfaction….for her maintaining the children of Joseph Edmundson.
…if the said Joseph (he being departed out of this colony) does not return by March next…
Order Book 5, p. 248. 16 Dec 1718. Petition of Joanna Smith versus Benjamin Edmundson….he be summoned.
Order Book 5, p. 309. 20 May 1719. Suit of Joanna Smith versus Benjamin Edmundson…ordered that the estate of Joseph Edmundson in the hands of the Plaintiff be appraised in money … and also the plaintiff be allowed L 16 current money per year for maintaining 2 children belonging to the said Joseph Edmundson 4 years & she be paid what shall be wanting of the same…out of the estate of the said Joseph in the hands of James and Benjamin.
It appears then that Joseph left two children about 1714 with Joanna Smith, possibly his eldest son Joseph and a daughter Mary but likely the two youngest children of his first marriage. He had married his second wife Priscilla and had children of this marriage by 1717.

His will August 4, 1743, names wife Priselow and a number of sons and daughters of both wives. See records of Craven County Edmondsons, compiled by Stephen W. Edmondson.
