I have the following on Red River County which might help.

RED RIVER COUNTY.
This county was located in northeastern Texas near the Arkansas line. Clarkesville was the county seat.

1846. William Edmondson is on the Tax List. This would probably be William below who was born in Kentucky.
1850 Census.
William Edmundson, 42, tanner, b. in Ky. Martha, 28, b. in SC. Caroline, 24. Malinda, 19. Thomas, 12. David, 9. Samuel, 6. James, 3. William, 2. All born in SC. P. 416.

William Edmundson, 33, farmer, b. in SC. James, 5. Mary, 3. William, 1. All born in SC. No wife shown. P. 417. He is listed on the slave schedule for taxes.

T.B. Edmundson, 23, farmer, b. in AR. P. 428.
John Edmundson, 54, farmer, b. in SC. Eli Edmundson, 13, b. in SC. P. 440
Samuel Edmonson is on the tax list as a slave owner.

(Nancy Brehm, descendant of John Edmundson, believes John and William were brothers. Both were born in SC. John moved from SC after 1837. William moved from SC about 1849, appears to have just arrived in Texas before the census. His wife appears to have died very recently as he has a 1 year old child born in SC).

April, 1852. John Edmondson died intestate about this time. His wife Margaret seems to have died shortly before he did. Margaret is believed to be the widow of Alexander Wetmore who died in 1826. As the census shows Eli, his son, born in SC about 1837, it is likely Eli had a different mother. Daniel McKinney took care of the estate from Aug. 13 to Sept. 30. An inventory of the estate listed much personal property and one league and one labor of land except 80 acres which had been sold, the land valued at $1500. Total value of the estate was estimated as $2243.43. He owned no slaves.
A sale of personal property was held Nov. 5, 1852.
Many household items and plantation tools were listed. A yellow pony sold for $45 and a sorrel horse for $60. Corn sold for 32 cents a bushel. A yoke of old oxen brought $55. A bell cow and calf $12. Twelve head of cattle brought $98.
J.H. Cade rented the plantation. The estate paid $10 for construction of John Edmondson’s coffin.

Eli Edmondson, the only son, was a minor and at the JWP McKenzie School in Clarkesville, a boarding school, when his father died. His sister Parthenia was two years older and married to William Chaney (or Chancey). Eli chose James B. Wooten as his guardian. The court set aside $200 each for support until the estate could be settled. Parthenia Edmondson Chaney soon petitioned to divide the estate. This was not possible as a land patent had to be obtained for John’s land headright. There were considerable debts.

Feb. 27, 1853. James B. Wooten was made administrator of the estate of John Edmondson. The estate was valued Nov. 5, 1853, at $2334.49. He transferred $150 to Eli Edmondson in 1853. He asked to extend the administration Jan. 29, 1855. The plantation was rented at that time for only $50. He filed a report Dec. 19, 1856, paying the court $7.50.

Jan. 20, 1855. John Edmondson m. Susan C. Ward. Book A, p. 43.
Nov. 25, 1860. David C. Edmondson m. Louisa C. Davidson. Book A, p. 138.
Nov. 18, 1856. Eli Edmonson married Mary P. Joyce in Collins County. The marriage record spells the family name Edmonson, not Edmundson. He and Mary lived in Collins County in 1860 (census).

Jan. 27, 1857. Parthenia Edmondson petitioned again to divide the land on both sides of Kickapoo Creek, a league and a labor. Apparently, division was made. Her second husband Josiah Scroggins was made her guardian at some point due to her lunacy. He petitioned March 30, 1860, to sell 640 acres to Patrick Sherry for $2080. They had one child, Mary Elizabeth Scroggins. Josiah Scroggins was captured in the Confederate Army and died in POW prison in Elmira, NY. Parthenia sold another 640 acres to Mary Melton from her father’s estate in Hopkins County, May 17, 1866. Her mother and father had land left Margaret Edmondson in Hopkins County by James Averas, probably Margaret’s father. Parthenia married Albert Doolin, Jan. 1, 1867. They moved to Red River County from Hopkins County. She had two more children, Rowena and Belle Doolin. Parthenia was found again to be insane March 8, 1879, and was committed to the insane asylum in Austin. She still had 900 acres of land and interest in the estate of Josiah Scroggins, her second husband.
Mary Elizabeth Scroggins married Charles Thomas Tucker, before Jan. 22, 1880. Her tombstone shows her birth Dec. 15, 1862, and her death July 25, 1904. Tucker was made Parthenia’s guardian Jan. 22, 1880, at which time her estate of 822 acres was valued at $1000. Tucker had little property, asked the court for permission to sell part of the estate to pay her large debts. Over the years he had to sell more land. In 1893, he asked the court to remove him as her guardian. Mary Elizabeth Tucker, her daughter, asked to court to name her as guardian and this was done July 9, 1896. She still had estate in Red River County now worth $2500. Parthenia died between 1896 and 1903. Mary Elizabeth said later that her mother was never crazy but was manipulated to control her land.
(Many copies of original documents were provided to SWE by a descendant, Nancy Brehm, in 2008. This information was summarized from them. brehm@htcomp.net).
