Thaddeus Pembroke Edmondson of Halifax County, VA.

A grave in the Baker Cemetery, Bartow County, Georgia, is inscribed: Thaddeus L.W. Edmundson, died Oct. 18, 1840. In all my research in Georgia records I have found no other evidence of this man. I have guessed he might have come to Georgia to buy land with a plan to move. The only other Thaddeus Edmondson I have encountered is Thaddeus P.Edmundson, listed in the 1850 Census of Halifax County, Virginia, a slave trader. Apparently in his household was Lucinda Edmondson, 45, b. in Virginia, possibly his mother or a sister of his father. He married Ann C, born in Virginia, after 1850. Her father was from Pennsylvania. Halifax County Death Records show the death of an 11 month old son of T.P. and A.C. Edmondson, John R. Edmundson, in July, 1857, and a stillborn child in November 1857. The 1860 Census lists T.P. Edmundson, Southern District, Halifax County, 39, b. in VA. Ann C. Edmundson, 24, b. in Pennsylvania. L.C. Edmundson, 50 year old female, b. in VA. Mary E. Edmundson, 5, b. in VA. Evan J. Edmundson, 10 months, b. in VA. L.C. Edmundson would appear to be Lucinda, shown in the 1850 Census.

Thaddeus Pembroke served in the Confederate Army and died about 1864-65. His name is listed on a soldiers' monument in Halifax. His son Evan died in childhood.
The 1870 Census of Halifax shows Ann Edmundson, Banister, Halifax County, white female born in Virginia; Mary Edmundson, b. about 1855, in VA; Hyacintha Edmundson, b. about 1860 in VA; William Edmundson, b. about 1862. In the household is Daniel Long, b. about 1837 in Virginia, possibly brother of Ann C.

The 1880 Census lists Ann C. as Katie, 42, b. in PA, father born in Ireland and mother in PA. Mary Edmondson, 24, b. in VA, father b. in VA and mother in PA. Hyacinth Edmondson, 19, b. in VA, parents b. in VA and PA. William Edmondson, 16, b. in VA, parents b. in VA and PA. Again Daniel Long, 49, b. in VA and both parents born in VA, is in the household.
The birthplace of his parents would seem to rule out his being a brother of Ann C./Katie. Three mulatto children bearing the Edmondson name are in the household.

Does anyone have other information on this man and his family? It is likely he is connected with the large Edmundson family living in Halifax County in the early 1800's, possibly a grandson of John Edmondson and grandson of Thaddeus L.W. Edmondson who is buried in Bartow County, GA. Banister is a little community near the NC line in southern Halifax County.
Stephen W. Edmondson
