John Edmondson, Census of 1850. Weedowee District, age 27, b. in GA, farmer. Married to Sarah, 23, wife, born in GA. In household, Bartlett Prince, female, 25, b. in GA. This couple were recently from Troup County, GA.where marriage records say John H. Edmondson married Sarah Terry, Jan. 3, 1847, by Miles Estes, J.P. (See Early Marriages of Troup County, by Merle M. Bruce). John H. Edmondson signed a promissory note, Dec. 7, 1846, to Hardy Nelson for $160 secured by land in the 15 District of Troup, part of Lot 149, 50 acres. Deeds J-381. James Edmondson of Troup sold 28 acres in Lot 149, Dist. 15, to James H. Edmondson of Randolph County Alabama for $100. This was witnessed by Eli Edmondson. Eli's statement attesting the sale was dated Jan. 1849. Deed J-596. John H. Edmondson of Troup sold 88 acres in Lot 149 and 150 to Noah Garrett of Troup, bounded by the land of James Edmondson, Clark, Jesse Garrett and Young, for $440.50, recorded Nov. 8, 1848. Deeds K-42. James Edmondson sold land in Troup, Lot 149 and 150, for $600 to Jeremiah Smith. Recorded Jan. 29, 1851. Deeds K-1851. These records strongly suggest a close family relationship between John H., Eli and James Edmondson, John H. and Eli probably being sons of James. James first appears in early Troup Countyin the 1832 Gold Lottery, living in the 735 Militia District, and drawing Land Lot 264, Dist. 2, Section 4, in Paulding County. He is listed as a Second Lieutenant in the Troup County Militia, commission dated March 30, 1830-Sept. 9, 1836. He is listed in the 1840 Census but not in later Troup County censuses. What happened to him? James Edmondson appears in Coweta County, adjoining Troup, when he began to buy property in Newnan. January 8, 1851; June 3, 1851; May 7, 1852, and others in 1852-54. He became guardians of the minor children of Joseph Edmondson of Coweta after the death of their mother in 1848, posting $10,000 bond. He died in 1757, without a will as his estate was administered by John S. Bigby (Minutes, Court of Ordinary, Book D-p. 53). No mention of heirs. He appears to be a brother of Joseph Edmondson who was born in S.C. One record shows his name as James A. Edmondson. Was this James the man in Troup who sold out about the time James shows up in Coweta? Does anyone have a Census of 1850 showing this man? Notify Administrator about this message?
