Dr. Batson was speculating on the father of the children listed on the 1850 Cencus. No one has found proof as yet. 1850 Cencus listed Martha, Eli, David, Rebecca, and Thomas.
Since most kids name their kids after their parents- it would stand to reason that is why both Rebecca and Thomas have Marthas as children But Martha could have been a grandmother to them as well. On the 1850 Cencus Martha stated she was born in Ga. But on the 1860 Cencus she states she was born in SC.

It is interesting that Rebecca and Thomas state on every Cencus that their parents were born in SC. On the 1860 Cencus Mary Polly Belcher(Belsher) states she was born in SC. She is in the HH with husband Edmond T. Belsher age 44 with William L.14, Sarah E., Martha V., Louisa M.G., Nancy A. Cordelia, and a James Strickland.

1860 Cencus lists Martha as 76(instead of the supposidly 60 she should have been in 10 yrs from 1850)Thomas is 18.
Next door is James W. Edmundson 28 with wife Adeline24 and kids Samantha5 and John W. 2. Next door to James is Eli Edmundson 36 wife Mary A. 35 son David 1 and a Josiah York age 7 (maybe his wife's child before marriage?)David listed in the 1850 Cencus is missing in 1860 Cencus. There is a John C. Edmondson born SC. in the Roakoke area with wife Mary A.age 21 and M.P.(or D.)6 and M.P.2 How(Or if) they fit in I do not know.

As for Thomas having a Polly Belcher as a daughter, not so.
Thomas married Mary Susan Mitchell and had:
Andrew Jackson, Martha "Mattie"(Mrs. Will Abbott), Thomas Grant, Mary Jane "Mollie"(Mrs. John Gay), John W., David R., Garfield William, Doctor Benjamin"Dock", Little Jimmy who died as an infant.Mary Susan died 11-26-1895 and Thomas married Mary Anna Francis "Duck" Grant, Dau. of Major Grant and Mary Unknown.Thomas and "Duck" had:
Lola McKinley(Mrs. W. R. Tillis-my grandmother), Dewey, Whit, Ellen(Mrs. Benny Cummings), Ophelia"Felie" (Mrs. William Davidson).

Now, You may be right in saying that my Mary Polly is not from Bryant's NC line, seeing that all mine did indeed come from SC.. But I can not find any Belcher links in Caleb's line nor any of his folks in Randolph Co. But my Edmundson/Edmondson/Edmonson were all around Troup,Coweta and possibly Heard Co., Ga right along with Bryant's. We may never know the truth- but I shall continue looking.
