As far as I know there has been no proof of the last name of Sam'l Buchanan's wife, though most of the references I have give itas Martha Key/Keys. 'Early Southwest Virginia Families" by Elizabeth Kelly Allison [1960] has his wife as Martha Keys ... and has been used as proof in various DAR applications, and been accepted. No one has refuted it convincingly. 'Thomas Thompson and Ann Finney of Colonial Pennsylvania and North Carolina ....with allied lines of Finney, McAllister, Buchanan and Hart' by Jane Gray Buchanan [1987] does not give his wife a last name. This book has many references to the name Samuel Buchanan and his doings, but no proof of marriage. John A. Blakemore who did so much research on various Buchanans did not publish much on this Samuel though he speculated on the origins of the family. None of his notes that I have seen mention any wife for Sam'l other than a Martha Keys. Various other Buchanan researchers have sent me notes, but no one claims to prove his marriage. I have a note [somewhere] that says that a John Keys [of early VA] had a daughter ,Martha, but no other information. I have never been able to trace this family beyond the Valley of Virginia ... The Edmondsons, Buchanans, Hay/Hays and Key/Keys and Campbells lived in the same areas for many years and migrated together ..... so the Keys-Buchanan marriage is very likely. I hope someone has been able to put together more clues... Notify Administrator about this message?
