John Edmundson, the Quaker merchant, settled on the eastern shore of Maryland by the 1660's, about the same time as Thomas Edmundson, an Anglican, settled on the Rappahannock River in Virginia. The latter was there in the 1650's. I suspect their stories were quite different. The English Civil War had been brutal and winner take all. Thomas is thought by some to have been a King's man, while Quaker John would have been on the other side with Cromwell. Thomas was associated with a lot of Cavaliers who got out of England in part to escape the bad situation they faced as losers in the war, including the Washingtons and the Lees. Thomas's origins in England have been elusive, possibly because he slipped away. John appears to have come from a family in Lancaster. The Edmondson Family Association Bulletin has much information on the descendants of both men in the U.S.
