Cindy:Glad to hear from you. All or most of the information that I have concerns the Edisons in Canada.I will first quote from notes on the Edison Family from records of the Roseland Historical Society, Roseland, N.J. All of my notes came from my late father Dr. George Edward Harrison of Aylmer, Ont. Canada. I reside about 1 1/2 hours from there.
"The Edisons were mill owners in Holland for many generations. In the early part of the 18th century Thomas Edison, the great great grandfather of the inventor, came from Holland to New York City and established a bank there. Thomas did not take part against the revolutionists in the struggle for independence. His son John, however was a major in the British Army.
Major Edison's wife belonged to the New York Ogden family, who were English. The major and his family as loyalists removed to Nova Scotia during the Revolution. They settled near the town of Digby.
Major Edison's grandson, Samuel Edison, the father of the inventor, was born in Nova Scotia in 1804. In 1812 the entire family moved to upper Canada and settled in the township of Bayhay, Elgin Co. Ontario. Cap. Samuel Edison, the grandfather of the inventor, served as an officer in the Canadian militia throught the War of 1812.
Major John Edison died near Vienna at the age of 104 and war buried on the homestead. His son, Cap. Edison, died in Vienna in 1865 at the age of 103.Samuel Edison, father of the inventor, married Miss Nancy Elliott.
Their son, Thomas Alva Edison, was born in Milan, Ohio in 1847. His father died in Newark N.J. in 1896 and was buried at Port Huron Michigan.
Adonija Edison who married Nancy Williams, daughter of Enos Williams, went to Canada with Major John Edison and settled near Port Burwell, Ont. The British government gave them a grant of about 1000 acres of land or over 100 acres for each child.Adonija had one son Enos, and several daughters:Elsie (unmarried) SUSANNA (HAINES), Phoebe (Weaver), Betsy (Saxton) Sallie (Brundage) and Nancy (Merrill).SUSANNA had one daughter HANNAH, who married Newall Cameron.Their daughter DELLA CAMERON married George R. HARRISON and lived in Roseland N.J"
**My connection:George R. and Della Cameron Harrison had Russell.Russell m. Mary (Molly) Chute in Canada in 1916.Russell and Molly had my father Dr. George Edward Harrison in Aylmer, Ontario.**Thus my connection to the Edisons.
I have actually done very little research on the Edisons, having dwelt mostly on the Harrison side of the family. As far as the Edisons go, I have the story of how they settled in and around Vienna and Port Burwell. A lot of this 'story' is from memories of Nora Edison Coombs. The manuscript I have is dated April 1973 and written by Lyle Tait.
It gives among other things the children of John and Sarah Ogden Edison as being: Thomas(Margaret Fitzgerald); MARY ( DENNIS DOWLAND or DOWLIN); Moses (Jane Saxton); Captain Samuel (Nancy Simpson); Adonijah (Nancy Williams);Margaret (William Saxton) Sarah (James Wilson) and Catherine (Peter Weaver).
This also states the children of Samuel Jr and Nancy Elliot:Marion b 1829; Wiliam Pitt b 1832; Harriet Ann b 1833; Carille b 1836 and THOMAS ALVA EDISON b 1847 in Milan. All of the siblings were born in Canada.
"By the year of 1818 most of the Edison clan had received their crown deeds and they were recorded in the registry office in York, as well as on a revised may of Bayham Township dated 1816."
If you are interested I do have the Lot and Con. numbers of the various members of the Edisons including your MARY and Dennis Dowland (Dowlin).I also have information on how the land was assigned, etc.
Also, If interested, I have information re: Samuel Ogden Edison Junior, and his fight to the sanctuary of the United States, leaving his wife Nancy and children to follow.Let me know! The only reference I have to your MARY is that of being the wife of Dennis Dowland(Dowlin) and the location of their property.
If you wish, feel free to e-mail me directly.
I look forward to hearing from you.Regards, Ann
