Looking for descendants of John PLUMMER, Flesher, of Edinburgh Scotland, married to Mary Campbell, 26th April 1825 St Cuthberts Parish Edinburgh, for possible information leading to positive identification of my TANT ancestors. My grandfather, g-grandfather and gg-grandfather TANTs were all Fleshers or Butchers in Edinburgh, St Andrews and Linlithgow, this fact probably being the cause of the links to the PLUMMER family. My grandfather TANT was for a time, manager of the "River Plate Meat Company" shop in Linlithgow, this became the "Dewhurst" group in the 1930s, trading in Scotland as the "Alex Munro" chain. That Linlithgow shop is now part of the "Cancer Research UK" Charity shop. In 1848, John Plummer was a Flesher (Scots = Butcher) trading at 1&2 Middle Market or Cattle Market sited off Lauriston Place, now the location of the Central Fire Station HQ, Fire Museum and the College of Art. The Cattle Market was built on open ground in the 1830s, being replaced by the Fire Station etc in the early 1900s, when a much larger market was built at Slateford in the south-western outskirts of Edinburgh to take over from the various local markets. It appears likely that "1&2 Middle Market" were close to the market entrance, so it seems that John Plummer was running a significant business, probably wholesale as I have not located any obvious retail shops elsewhere in Edinburgh under the Plummer name. Today's "Yellow Pages" does not list any Plummers under the Butcher and related headings. John Plummer, his wife and their family were then living a short distance away at 112 Lauriston Place. My PLUMMER interest centres on two of the daughters, Mary Ann Plummer born about 26th October 1831; and Ann Campbell Plummer born about 29th September 1833. Those two daughters married two TANTs. Mary to John Tant b about 1832, m 2nd November 1860 St Giles Parish Edinburgh, both living at 9 Arthur Street. Ann to William Tant b abt 30 January 1828 in Cromarty, m 25th April 1852 St Andrews Parish Edinburgh. William Tant and Ann Campbell Plummer are my gg-grandparents. John Tant and Mary Ann Plummer are the g-grandparents of another TANT researcher co-operating with me to establish our TANT genealogy particularly. William Tant died in Dalmeny 1901 described as a "retired flesher", Ann Plummer dying in 1903. William Tant's parents were John Tant and Henrietta <Taint> <Loney?>, prob before 1822. One record suggests that Henrietta and William may have been related. John Tant died probably in Newton Heath Lancashire before 1881, Mary Plummer dying after 1881. John Tant worked as both as a violin/fiddle bow maker and later as a whip maker, both almost certainly involving horse hair. John Tant's parents were John Tant and Hannah Aldred m 15th May 1820 St James Westminster London, both probably being born in the 1790s. We suspect all of those Tants are related; but have hit the proverbial "glass ceiling" in positively identifying the migrant Tants in the English records to prove or disprove the supposition. Certainly I am aware of my mother, Elizabeth Tant, referring to some of those other Scottish Tants as being "cousins" etc; but without being able to define how. The early Scottish Tants clearly had connections with the "local gentry", possibly servants or tenants, in the Dornoch and Aberdeenshire areas as various "new", local, given names came into the Tant naming pattern and these are continued to the present day. The dates, locations etc are extracted from the IGI, OPRs, Civil Registrations, Street Directories etc. The information I am seeking is likely to be in family folklore or private unpublished documents, if it exists.
