I was wondering whether anybody has any ideas about what I can do about finding a poem or the event which it concerns. I found a message on the internet about Finlay Finlayson about a year ago. The lady who published it was asking whether anyone was related to Finlay Finlayson who died in 1885 as she had some information she wished to share. My great grandfather was called that name but the dates did not fit. I wondered about any possible connection but dismissed it. About 9 months later, I came across the message again by chance but found that the dates fitted the death of Finlay's uncle Finlay. Finlay (or Findlay) Finlayson born: 23 July 1864 in Drainie, Moray, Scotland (Lossiemouth) When I emailed the lady who published the message she told me that she came across a family bible in a local antique shop in Edinburgh. Inserted in it was a copy of a poem about The Tragic death of Finlay Finlayson. It had the letters of his name down the side as the beginning of each line. So she looked him up on the 1881 census index. Unfortunately she didn't have the cash to 'save' the three bibles on sale in the shop, but she made the enquiry in case someone had a link. Unfortunately, since she originally published the message the shop unfortunately closed and was turned into a Hi Fi shop. She couldn't remember exactly but she thought that the poem may have been set in Holland - on his families gravestone it said he died in Charente Tonnay France in 1885. I think this must be the same person - my relative was a Scottish seaman - to die in that part of the world would be pretty unusual I should imagine & all the dates fit. Can anybody help me at all? Thank you Lesley Finlayson Notify Administrator about this message?
