Alexander Smith, b. Edinburgh 1800?

My great Grand-Father John Ross Smith arrived in Melbourne Australia in 1852 in search of Gold. He found no gold, but worked hard and began a large extended family.
On his birth certificate his father Alexander is described as "Keeper of the Royal Constitution" - whatever that means??
At his Wedding in 1820 to Margaret Ross, Alexander is said to be from the "Trustees Office". Not sure what this means either??
John Ross Smith left behind brothers: Alexander, George, Robert and William Arbuthn. We are trying to track a family left behind in Scotland. Anyone got any ideas to guide us?
