Hi Linda,
Thanks for your response. When I saw the date of your first note I wondered if it had been too long ago for there to be a chance of a response.
Anyway, I have done a bit more enquiring and pieces are coming together, but there would still need to be a piece of evidence to provide a bridge between two pieces.
Firstly, from my relatives - Francis Arnold [died 1745], a freeman of Leicester married Anne Farren (died 1857). They had at least 8 children. One of them, William [1698-1770]my 5th great-grandfather, married Elizabeth Davenport in 1738; she died in 1758. They had at least six children.
Of those children, Dr Thomas Arnold [1742-1816] was my 4th great-grandfather. Another one of the children was John Arnold [1747-1816]. This John Arnold married an Elizabeth Sapcoate/Sapcote [1747-1827]in South Luffenham, Rutland. We know of at least two children to that marriage, one being Mary Arnold [1769-1855].
Mary Arnold married a Thomas Goodliffe on 20 Nov 1791 at Barrowden, Rutland. They had ten children. One of these children, John Goodliffe was the 2nd great-grandfather of Liz of Market Harborough, Leics. She and I have been in communication for some months now piecing together genealogical bits. From her I obtained all the information re Goodliffe connections amongst other things. I am going to send her a copy of this message in case she wants to make contact with this Message Board.
Any back to Mary Arnold and John Goodliffe. Another one of their children was Anne Goodliffe [1796-1886], born in Belton, Rutland. She married a John Culper (born around 1800) and they had at least one child, Sarah Goodliffe Culper [1829-1898].
Now switch to the other piece. Working backwards from Arnold Goodliffe Edgson. As I mentioned there is someone of this name remembered on the Kings Cliffe, Northants. memorial to the fallen from WWI (this is confirmed by the Commonweatlth War Graves Commission website search engine). Though there is a problem with his reported age at the date of death. The site I first came across and the CWGC site both list him as having been 31 when he died in 1919. That would mean he was born in 1888. Yet the site I quoted [www.roll-of-honour.com/Northamptonshire] also notes that, despite being 31 at the time of his death in 1919, that he was also born in Kings Cliffe 19 October 1871. Anyway that is an anomaly to be followed up later.
Now to Census information. You mention the 1901 and 1881 Censuses. The 1881 Census has an Arnold Goodliffe Edgson being a son of Edward and Sarah Goodliffe Edgson (as per the war memorial). Though the 1881 Census [RG11 1587/33] indicates he was 13 by then ... ie born in 1868 (not 1871 or 1888 as per the paragraph above). The 1901 Census [RG13/1237], has an Arnold G Edgson listed as a visitor in the home of a Herbert Jackson and family in London. He is listed as a hosier and having been born in Kingscliffe, Northants. Again his age is a complication - he is listed as being 33, which would mean he was born in 1868 ... consistent withn the 1881 census but not the war memorial.
The 1891 Census [RG12/239] lists an Arnold Edgson as being resident at a large drapery enterprise in London. His occupation is wharehouseman, his birthplace, Kings Cliffe and his age 24 ... implying a birth year of 1867 (I guess depending on the date the census was taken compared to the other censuses).
The 1871 Census [RG10/1513] lists an Arnold Goodliffe Edgson, son of Edward and Sarah and resident in Kingscliffe. Here is 3 years of age and born in Kings Cliffe.
Now the war memorial, which may refer to another Arnold Goodliffe Edgson of Kingscliffe altogether, had a mother by the name of Sarah Goodliffe Edgson, but that seems unlikely.
Given the Sarah Goodliffe name in the 1881 Census and the Sarah Goodliffe Culper, daughter of John Culper & Ann Goodliffe - did that latter Sarah Goodliffe marry an Edward Edgson to become the Sarah Goodliffe Edgson who was the mother of Arnold Goodliffe Edgson. This is the bridge waiting to be built. To date I can find no BMD information on such a marriage.
Anyway, I hope all the above is helpful to you.
Kind regards,
Lynn Arnold
