I have noticed on the site'sCliffe.html (compiled by Ernie Rusdale in 2004) that there is mention of the following name and details on the King's Cliffe War Memorial:

"Private, 678171, Arnold Goodliffe Edgson, 2nd Bn Canadian Mounted Rifles. Died 11-02-19, aged 31 (sic). Born in King's Cliffe 19.10.1871, enlisted Toronto, Canada, 25.01.16. Son of Edward and Sarah Goodliffe Edgson, King's Cliffe, Northants. Buried in King's Cliffe (All Saints) Churchyard, Northants. North of Church."

I am descended from William Arnold [1698-1770] of Leicester, through his son Dr Thomas Arnold [1742-1816]. Another relative of mine is descended through another son of William Arnold - John Arnold [1747-1861]. Descendants of John Arnold included those by the surname of Goodliffe (many of whom then carried the Christian name of Arnold).

I don't know of any that then married an Edgson, but the appearance of both Arnold and Goodliffe as Christian names above strongly suggest that there may have been such a marriage.

Leicestershire, Rutlandshire and Northamptonshire are particular stomping grounds of our extended family.

Does any of this tally with your information?

Lynn Arnold
