I think the Agent spelling is largely the result of the local accent. My Edgins are listed as Agent in the 1870 and 1880 census of Franklin County, Arkansas. They are listed as Edgin in the 1860, 1900, 1910 and 1920 census. There were two Nathan Edgins living in Franklin County, Arkansas from about 1853 until the death of Nathan Edgin (or Agent, son of Thomas). The other Nathan Edgin was my great grandfather. One of the Nathans may have changed his name to avoid confusion.
