Im going to start with the first family member to arrive in North America...its a story, and then I'll
just type the names and date like I did above.
Thomas 1 (the Immigrant)
Thomas 1, when 16 years old became an apprentice seaman, signing a contract to that effect with
Captain Issac Thompson of Roxbury, Mass. on April 1, 1630 in Yarmouth England.
On April 7, 1630 they sailed from Yarmouth with several ships of Gen. Winthrop fleet. Their ship
the "Arabella" landed in Boston July 30, 1630.
In December of that year, Captain Thompson was taken very ill and died. With his death Thomas
Edgerly was released from his control.
Thomas seemed to have vanished after the death of Capt. Thompson but apon further
investigation it was learned that he had returned to England on Aug. 3, 1631 and some time later
had entered Oxford University at Great Milton. He graduated in 1640 at the age of 26 with
honors. He was a great student and an honorable man.
In 1650 Thomas returned to America and soon aquired land in Durham, N.H. He was one of the
first settlers there, then known as Oyster River Township. At Dover N.H. he became a citizen of
America on June 29, 1652.
At a county Court held in Dover he became a Grand Juryman and later was appointed one of
seven Judges to the seven provinces of N.H., by the King.
On Sept 28, 1663, Thomas married a young widow named Rebecca Halloway, The father of
Rebecca Ault Halloway was John Halloway a constable at Dover, N.H.
The origin of the name Edgerly is made up of two simple words. Edge and Lea - Edge of the
meadow or lea.
During the 15th century the name was spelled Edgelea (Edgelea was later changed to Edgerlea).
About the 16th century the family decided on one spelling - Edgerly.
We do not know when the first Edgerly was born. We know that they migrated to England from
Scotland before 1170. As there is definite proof of several families in England in 1170 but no
information can be obtained on them. However the family has been traced back to 1209.
We start our history here from the year 1463 with the birth of William H. Edgerly in England.
William Edgerly was born in Great Milton, Oxforshire England in 1463. He was a wealthy man
and landed gentry. William 1 married in 1493 and in 1498 a son was born to him and named
Richard.
Richard married in 1533 and a son was born to him in 1539 and named Robert.
Robert married in 1569 and had a son named Francis, born in 1576.
Francis married in 1612 and became the father of Thomas Edgerly (My ancestor) in 1614.
