Well,
I have seen our Edgar surname spelled "Edger" too. If you really are researching your family, you must consider all the variations of spelling. After all, the people who were recording our surnames were fairly illiterate by today's standards and if they lived in an area where there were a lot of different accents (and there were very few areas where this wasn't the case, considering the numerous immigrants in most areas)this figured prominently into the pronunciation of the surname and thus into the spelling. And, those recording the surname tended to spell phoenetically. So, consequently, there are as many different spellings as there were pronunciations.
