These dates are mine - and are very circumstantial.
There is no evidence of a relationship between William and John. William was owner of Edgcumbe in 1273; John was the owner when he died in 1285. So William could be an older brother or uncle, instead of John's father - and since surnames were not fully hereditary and both are named from their lands, there is always a possibility that they were unrelated.
As to getting further back - unlikely, but if you do get anywhere there are a lot of us who will be thrilled!
