Freeman Foss and Joseph Edgecomb

I am researching a Freeman C. Foss. Freeman was born 6 Feb 1847 (or so someone told me). He is living with Joseph Edgecomb and Eliza in 1850, in 1860, in 1870, and in 1880 Freeman C. Foss is head of house with his wife Sarah E. and child. Joseph Edgecomb and Eliza are living with Freeman...probably same house as on other censuses. Joseph is listed in the 1880 census as father-in-law.
But I have a problem believing he lived with Joseph all his life...and no Sarah ever lived with Joseph.
Joseph married Evelina Foss in 1826. Could this be Freeman's mother even though he was born nearly 20 years after they were married? Or is there a generation gap here?
If Freeman was the son of Joseph and Evelina, why does he go by Freeman Foss and not Freeman Edgecomb? I'm so confused about this young man and need some help. Please?
