There are any number of examples.
For example, the Edward Edgcombe in my response today to Sally Towers decided to use the EDGECOMBE spelling. Most of his relatives were (and still are) EDGECOMB – although whether in the mid nineteenth century that was their own choice or of the local clerk is often not certain.
