HIRAM C. EDGE, 45-year-old farmer from Greenwood Springs, Monroe Country, Mississippi, enrolled at Aberdeen into Company B, 5th Battalion, Mississippi Infantry CSA. It was September 27, 1861. Ninety-four other men enrolled along with Hiram. The Captain of Company B was Aberdeen citizen, JOHN B SALE. Sale, according to Dr. W.A. Evans' in MOTHER MONROE, went on to distinguish himself in the military and eventually became a military advisor to CSA President Jefferson Davis. In December 1862 at a military hospital in Chattanooga, Hiram C. Edge died. Robin Linn, researcher and writer from New Orleans, has extracted a wealth of information about this Monroe County CSA unit, its men and officers, its deployment to Mobile, Alabama; Pensacola, Florida; Chattanooga; Tennessee; Kentucky, and elsewhere. An excerpt of that work is posted at the blog, HILL COUNTRY OF MONROE COUNTY MISSISSIPPI. Here is a link to Hiram C. Edge Hill Country Confederate: http://hillcountryofmonroecountry.blogspot.com/2007/09/hiram-c-edge-hill-country-confederate.html Robin's article looks at where this Monroe County unit was located during its early time in the Civil War and of the unit's reorganization into other military units. Further her work offers a glimpse into conditions under which this Hill Country unit served.
