You are correct about the Scottish roots. The surname originated in the Scottish lowlands (in and around the Nithsdale area). There are at least three different familiy groupings that I have found in America in the early 1700's. One is the the NYC/Rahway, NJ area in the mid 1700's. This was a fairly prosperous family which placed officers in the revolution. Another is found in and around Philadelphia (a primary location for arriving ships from England) in the early 1700's. This family had merchants who also did not appear to be poor. This family also had members who were instrumental in the Pennsylvannia legislature and the formation of the Articles of Confederation. There are also Edgar's whose roots are less clear and who had more frontiersman lifestyles and who served in the Revolution as enlisted men . Unfortunately this is where my line is stuck. There is an Edgar line in Maryland in the late 1600's and early 1700's and there are Edgar's in the Northeast - Massachusetts for example. Passenger arrival lists are a good source of information. All of these families appear to be Scottish or Scots-Irish Presbyterians.
