I have been researching for several years, trying to find the origins of a Sophia Edgar, b. abt. 1803. This woman appears in a burial record in now Carbon, then Northampton County PA, and 1852 burial record, and in the notes section of the burial record it is stated that her maiden name was Edgar and that she came from Columbia County PA.
In my research for her origins, possibly of the Fishing Creek area of Columbia County, I searched for Edgar information in NY, the place of origin of the Columbia County Edgars. I have made many notes on the record transcriptions I have found. First are Columbia County PA land records which list a William Edgar and Elizabeth Edgar as having taken out a warrant in PA for property on Fishing Creek. The date of the warrants are, 19 Dec 1792 and 22 April, 1793. The first warrant is a survey of property in Fishing Creek for 30 acres, to "William Edgar et al". The next two dated 22 April 1793 are for 400 acres, possibly Catawissa, location name not easily read, could be the Bloomsburg area. The first shown is to Elizabeth Edgar, survey, the second is to William Edgar, survey. The Edgars owned a mill, likely a lumbering mill in the Fishing Creek area in Columbia County PA.
There are several William Edgar records in NY, the most likely pertinent record is a marriage license taken out on February 25, 1783, William Edgar and Elizabeth Rice. This is from "Providence of NY, marriage licenses prior to 1784. Other records found for early Edgars in NY show:
