Hi Lea,
John Edgar married Rebecca White in the Bethnal Green area of London in 1840. The 1851 census says he was born in Suffolk. If you get his marriage certificate it should give his father's name. There are 3 deaths of John Edgar in the Mile End and Islington areas of London between Dec 1857 and Jun 1858 one of which is probably him. You could contact the Tower Hamlets records office, see www.thbmd.co.uk which have online records and it is possible to ask them which one is the right age and then get the certificate.
