Hi Lea,
Testing for ancestral DNA is quite simple and painless - a simple swab inside the cheek with a Q-tip does the trick (three is the usual number, just to ensure a good swab). Then it is mailed to the testing lab. In our case, the Edgar DNA Project, we use Relative Genetics of Salt Lake City.
When the test is completed, the result are mailed to the sponsor (could be a female who sends in her brother's, father's, cousin's DNA - but it must be a male submitter). The test is for the Y chromosome, so it has to be from a male of the Edgar line.
