(Not sure if this is our John are not but the date is perfect to be him. Still need to do more searching to be sure.) HISTORY: John may have come to America around 1702 or 1703 possibly from Scotland. He is buying land around Woodbridge, New Jersey in 1709. John sold his land in Woodbridge in 1734. Sometime after 1736 he decides to move to the Marsh Creek Settlement (Manor of Maske) in what is now called Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Presumably to reside near his two brothers not sure which 2 at this time. This was around 1741. According to the records about the Manor of Maske all, or virtually all residents of the Marsh Creek Settlement were Scotch-Irish. These people were Scots whose families had lived in Ireland for a century are more because the British had invited them to go there from Scotland. Convinced that the British Goverment had not kept their promises a large number of these Scotch-Irish had been coming to America since the second decade of the 18th century. In November 1742 Thomas Cookson told Thomas Penn that the settlement was "full of ye poorest of ye Irish," of people who were characterized by "a factious Spirit". Before he died John owned a plantation of 205 acres just northwest of the present town of Gettysburg on a site near where the first shot of the Civil War at Gettysburg would eventually be fired. The property John owned is located on the Chambersburg Pike Road and there is now a cemetery on his property. The cemetery name is Oak Lawn Memorial Garden's. From Gettysburg heading out of town on the Chambersburg Pike Road it is on the left hand side of the road. His home according to the man at the Historical Society was still standing until 1947 when it burned. The home was located in about the center of the present day cemetery. From the cemetery you can look northeast and see Seminary Ridge about a mile away. His son Samuel Eddy owned the property up until 1809 when he died. According to different sources it was still in the Eddy family at the time of the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Did Helen's mother remarry by the 1920 census and is she with this husband in 1920? In 1930 Helen Roupe is living in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. Rupe Part 3 The immigrant to America Johann Jacob(3) was born in 1723 and of interest one week later his grandfather Johann Jacob(1) and his second wife Anna Catharina delivered a set of twins. It is unknown if Johann Jacob(3) became a barrel maker or if he learned the trade of millwright. Several years later he would be teaching his youngest child Heinrich Rupe the trade millwright in Carroll County, Maryland. Johann Jacob married Maria Barbara Nonnenmaker of Kutzenhausen. She was a member of the Kutzenhausen Lutheran church. Johann and his family before him were German Reformed. Johann and Maria Barbara had three sons born to them before they left for America in 1752: Johan Jacob 1747, Johann Michel 1749, Johann Martyn 1751. They had several more children after coming to America. It is believed that Anna Maria was born ca. 1753, then George ca. 1756 then Barbara ca. 1759, then Johann ca. 1762, then finally Heinrich ca. 1765. After Johann Jacob and his family arrived in America it is believed that they lived for a time in Pennsylvania, probably in the Hanover area which is not far from the Maryland line. Johann Jacob bought 115 acres of land in Baltimore County in 1770 with Pennsylvania money. The tract was called Rhineharts Folly. Here it is believed that the family built a mill. Things were moving very fast for Johann Rupe. In 1771 he was naturalized and became a citizen of the Baltimore Colony. The American Revolutionary War was looming on the horizon. Johann Jacob and his family dropped out of sight. It is believed that the family bought land in a North Carolina land company and after the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783 the family resurfaced in Baltimore County. Three of Johann Jacob and Maria Barbara's children were beginning their families. Michel, Barbara, and Heinrich were those who were having their children baptized in the 1780's. Nothing is known about the other members of the family, namely Jacob, Martyn, George, Johann. It is believed that one or more of the brothers stayed in North Carolina. Michel Rupe was the only member of the family to remain in Maryland the others got caught up in the excitement of the westward movement, which began in the late 1780's. Johann Jacob believed that his youngest son Heinrich would stay in Maryland and keep the business going. He sold the property, minus 15 acres he sold to Johann Shaur in 1788, to Heinrich for a fraction of what he paid for it in 1770. Johann Jacob and his wife Maria Barbara were still alive in 1792 a year before Heinrich sold Rhineharts Folly to Jacob Boblitz in 1793. [Source: Theron A. Rupe, "From Oberhoffen to American", Introduction to Louise Akers' book "The Family Rub, Rup, Rupe, Roop, Roope"] ***** The Maryland Germans The following are excerpts from the book "The Maryland Germans". This is included to give the reader background on the living conditions of our ancestors. [compiled by Linda P.Roop, ca. 1993] "The immigrant Germans had been the first settlers in Western Maryland. Later on, Irish, Scotch and English immigrants joined them and aided them in the development of the back counties. They looked for the kind of land and rivers to substain farms and simular occupations such as millwrights and carpentry. The area was sparsley populated and the Indian danger was great." "Quite different was the development of the second great German settlement, the city of Baltimore. Baltimore was founded by immigrants from the British Isles in 1729, its development was slow and in competition with the old county seat, Joppa. By the time the Germans began to play a significant part in its development, the struggle for supermacy between Baltimore and Joppa for the county seat had already been decided in favor of Baltimore. In 1768, when the inhabitants of Baltimore drew up a petition to have the county seat transferred from Joppa to Baltimore, the petition was printed in English and German." [It is important for the Roop's to know at this point, a Michael Rupe, Jacob Rupe, Martin Ra(u)pe and Anton Null signed the petition to have the county seat moved to Baltimore. - Linda P. Roop] "In western Maryland the German element consisted of the anonymous mass of farmers and artisans, all of them fine, honest fellows whose names would have been quite forgotten had not the church register preserved them. The church played an important part in the life of the German people and through the reading of church records so much can be learned of the joys and hardships they incurred in their lives." "Most Germans were affiliated with a Lutheran or a Reformed congregation, (they split), a few belonged to various other sects-Moravians, Methodists, Mennonites, Dunkers, and occasionally a few Catholics would crop up. There was great discord among the Germans and English because they (the Germans) were required to pay a "Church Tax" to the Anglican or Episcopal Church, due to an antiquated law dated 1692...this was a heavy burden on them because they had to raise money to build their own church and support their own minister. They complained saying they did not derive any benefit from the tax. They wished to have a minister who spoke the German language and knew and understood their customs and ceremonies. (The pastors the English sent them did not speak German). The first generation of Germans very naturally had protracted difficulty with the English language, many were taken unfair advantage of. Examples of this was the taxation." [In 1773, Jacob Rupe paid taxes to Pipe Creek Hundred Church. Documented in the book, "Inhabitants of Baltimore Co., Md. 1763-1774" p83 p38. - Linda P. Roop] "Later on in the 1800's, the government (U.S.) wanted to draft a German unit from western Maryland to fight in the Spanish-American War. Many had difficulity understanding the reason why as they had left their homes and families because of the unlawful military drafts made by aristocratic society in Europe. Although many of the Germans had left their old homes because they hoped to find a place some where in the world where they could live their lives in peace, all manifested considerable reluctance to go to war. Yet, there is no doubt they did their full share in the defense of Maryland. And it was Western Maryland which suffered earliest and most severely from enemy attack. It is a well-known fact during the Revolutionary War, German soldiers fought on both sides. On the American side were the German immigrants and their sons, while on the British side were the Hessian and South German troops whose services had been sold to the English by their princes. Much has been written about the difficult and pathetic position of the Hessian soldiers who were forced to fight for a cause that did not concern them. You can imagine their surprise when they heard their own dialect being spoken and how they felt when they saw the free society in which their ex-country men lived. They often deserted and joined the Americans." "The Americans took full advantage of the opportunity to obtain fully trained soldiers. Many of the German prisoners of war were sent to Frederick County, Maryland, where it was considered a safe place to keep them. This created a curious situation... whole regiments of German prisoners of war were guarded by their former countrymen. They were given the freedom to do pretty much what they wanted. Some guards!!! The prisoners heard their own dialect spoken and saw their own customs being practiced, pretty soon they made themselves comfortable and soon forgot about His British Majesty. They worked in the fields for the farmers, gradually working themselves into the daily life of the countryside." [George Rupe, Jacob Rupe and Martin Ra(u)pe signed the Oath of Alligiance in 1778 in Baltimore County, Baltimore, Md. - Linda P. Roop] "In March 1783, the end of the war came, believe it or not the victory celebration was conducted by a prisoner of war, an officer from Bayruth. He prepared the fireworks and had his band play at the American Victory ball. Many of the prisoners never returned home, they bought farms, married the daughters of the German settlers and established permanent homes. Those who settled in Frederick County could buy their freedom for eighty Spanish dollars and those who could not raise the money was loaned the money by their neighbors." [Dieter Cunz, The Maryland Germans. Princeton, 1948, pp. 5859.] Baltimores offer was designed to attract Germans from Pennsylvania, who had been moving through his land into the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. "The Germans were useful economically; they were already helping to turn Pennsylvania into a breadbasket," writes Weiser. [Weiser, The Brunners of Scheverstadt, p. 23.] "Moreover, they served as a natural barrier between the Indians, now driven inland, and the older coastal English settlements. Lord Baltimores scheme worked. German families from southeastern Pennsylvania (whose land prices were already beginning to climb) moved into the valley along the Monocacy and stayed." Of the above families, Annette Kunsel Burgert, only located and identified Michael Harr, the Widow Kern, Henrich Kern, Jacob Rubb, Jacob Seyler and Martin Wuterich for her book, "18th Century Emigrants from the Northern Alsace to America", Picton Press, Camden, Maine, 1992. Volume II of "The Alsace Emigration Book", by Corneilia Schrader-Muggenthaller lists all of the above families, but simply indicates that they emigrated to America on 01/01/1752. [Source: A Brief History of Baltimore County; online http://www.bcplonline.org/info/history/hist_bacohistory.html] By 1768 it had become apparent that the once thriving port of Joppa on the Gunpowder River was no longer capable of handling the commercial shipping for which the port facilities of the rapidly growing port of Baltimore Town on the Patapsco River were needed. Largely as a result of this shift, it was obvious to most people that Baltimore was a far more appropriate seat for the county government. The Assembly, however, with great fairness, chose to made this determination on the basis of a popular referendum, and ordered that petitions, both pro and con the change, be circulated throughout the county to be signed by all adult males over 18 -- virtually a census of adult county residents in 1768...(pg. 393) [Source: Richard B.
