William Abner Eddy
Posted by: Bob White Date: May 11, 2001 at 07:02:21
  of 1974

I am researching information on William Abner Eddy for a book that I am writing on the contributions of this man to the development and utilization of kites as instruments to assist scientific investigation of the atmosphere.

Born in New York on January 28, 1850 to H. J. Eddy and his second wife Amanda (Doubleday), William Abner Eddy worked for the now defunct New York Herald.

He designed and patented (1900) the "Eddy Tailless" diamond kite based on modifications to the 'Malay' kite of the Indonesian archipelago.

Eddy did early work with the US Weather Service at the famous Blue Hill Observatory in Massachussetts in 1895-95.

He is credited with taking the first aerial photography from a kite in the Western Hemisphere on May 30, 1895.

I have extensive information on his work with kites, but am seeking to learn more about his life, his family, his work with the New York Herald and so forth to complete the picture on this kiting pioneer.

Sincerely, Bob White (bwhite@niagara.com)
