Echols Family Genealogy Forum

Dear Nancy,
Thank you for your information which looks very detailed and therefore as though you might have sources for it. If these are the right folks, and the similarities to what I know say they are, I can tell you a little about the wife of Samuel Hartford Echols, Virginia Jarrell, and their daughter, Florence Lelia Echols. Florence was my grandmother, and she was an ambitious lady. She was a nurse, I believe in a Kanawha County hospital, when she met a my grandfather, George Lee Dillard, a judge in Bluefield, West Virginia. They were married in 1914, and lived in Bluefield until he died in 1935 or 36. (I have the dates, I've just forgotten for the moment.) I have an article about Judge Dillard written in a West Virginia yearbook from around 1927 with the biographies of notable West Virginia people still living at that time. The article reports that Virginia Jarrell was living with Florence's family in Bluefield at the time of the article. I infer from this that Samuel Hartford was deceased, or perhaps in a nursing home. Florence and George Dillard had three boys. Two were graduates of West Point (George Henderson Lee Dillard and David Sempel Dillard), and the third, my father, was a neurosurgeon and a graduate of Harvard Medical School (Peter Harrison Dillard). All of these people are now deceased. Florence lived into her 90's, dying in about 1976, I believe. (I was at her funeral.)
I would be very interested in knowing your sources for the information you have given us.
My regards, Peter Harrison Spencer Dillard
