Many Echols evolved out of Virginia and West Virginia from Charles Eccles who settled in PA in 1748 and his brother Edward who settled in VA the same year. They came from Belfast NI. Most of the family today uses Eckels or Eckles or Echols. They were actually Ulster-Scots. There were Echoltz in the south at the same time, but this is not the only source for Echols.
