Hi Larry and Mike, I have noticed your exchange concerning possible descendants of David Eckols of Tenn. who migrated to Illinois. Well, back in the mid-1960's I corresponded with Aud L. Eckols of Pinckneyville, Illinois, who was kind enough to inquire of his older relatives. Aud informed me that his grandfather was Thomas Eckols who was in the Civil War and came from Tennessee. Thomas's brother John also came to Illinois but they were separated and Thomas was never able to locate John. Aud mentioned that his, Aud's, father was Samuel Eckols and that his, Aud's, uncle was Levi Eckols, and that Samuel and Levi had a sister. In the mid-1960's, Levi was in his eighties. Aud also mentioned that he had an aunt whose name was Mrs. Cecil Rice who was then living on Broadway in Lincoln, Illinois. Aud received a note concerning his grandfather Thomas from his cousin Moby who was his aunt's child. I hand-copied the note that Aud received from his cousin Moby and this is what it said: Thomas Eckoles born Dec. 27, 1837 Wilson Co., Tenn. he said was in Middle Tenn., and near Salsbury. his Father name David. his folks came from France his Mother was Irish. I don't know where Grandpa [Thomas] father was born in France are where he was born in Tenn.--I think he had 2 brothers mean Grandpa--Ones name was Joe and the other name was Sam. Joke Eckols was Grandpa Brother boy and when he died are before he died Grandpa [that's where the note ended]. Aud was born May 10, 1897, and had two sons and two grandsons when he wrote to me back in January 1966. Hopefully, this will help you and the other descendants of David Eckols in putting your trees together. Through clues, I descend from a John Eckols who was born about 1797 in the Wilson Co., Tenn. area. I noticed that there was an early David Eckols whose estate was probated in Wilson Co., Tenn., in 1806, and who had been of neighboring Smith Co., Tenn., previous to that. He was involved in one real estate transaction with Moses Eckols of Sumner/Wilson Co., and I suspect that the elder David may have been one of Moses's older sons, and other sons may have been Anderson, John, and Abner. Anderson, John, and Abner eventually wound up in Madison Co., Tenn., where Anderson evidently died. John and Abner left in the 1830's for Texas. However, at least in John's line, they retained the spelling Eckols which his Eckols descendants still use in Gonzales Co., Texas. Aud also used that same spelling. Lance Bretsnyder
