Based on census records the parents of Don Henry Echols are Joseph and Hattie Echols. They can be found on the 1880 Drew County, Arkansas census. Joseph shows to have been born in Mississippi around 1845 and both of his parents born in Virginia. Hattie shows to have been born around 1837 in Arkansas and both parents in Tennessee. (note he is indexed as Don Heny - no r in Henry) It is quite probable that they are the same people listed as William and Mary Echols in the 1870 Drew County census. People did not always give the same name at every census. Sometimes they gave first name, sometimes middle, sometimes nicknames. The ages, birth locations, and child make sense for this to be the same family. There is a W J Echols of the appropriate age and birthplace living with the Jesse Newton family in Drew County in 1860. If you follow the link below you will be taken to a page which has a history for William J. Echols written in 1889 confirming the above (except there are actually 2 wives -- Mary and Hattie.) This is on the Drew County USGENWEB site. When you get to the page, scroll down until you find him. His parents are listed there also as Thomas Echols and Rebecca Mallet of Virginia. http://backwardbranch.com/ardrew/dcgood.html I hope this has helped you. I am not related to this direct line, but to a Joel Echols of Tennessee who was married to Susannah Weir. She was a sister to my ancestor. If you would like anymore help, just post.
