Hi Larry
I have not been able to find anymore info about Absolom Echols being killed by a Johnson Hammock or Hammack. Could you tell me which Hammack line you descend from and which echols line your wife descends from? The reason I ask is my ancestor was Jane Echols born about 1779 according to later census records. I don't know where she was born or who her parents were. Every thing lines up that she was the daughter of James Echols, father of Milner and Absolom and one other brother I can not remember his nmae right now except that all the sites I have found do not list a Jane born about 1779. Jane married Solomon Ray or Wray in 1796 in Wilkes co Ga. Solomon Ray lived next to Lewis M Hammock or Hammack in Wilkes co Ga. Lewis M Hammock died I believe in Jones Co Ga where many of the Hammocks went. Have you by any chance see a Ray connection to your Hammack family in the 1790's in Wilkes co Ga. that area is now Talifero co Ga. I have searched for over four years trying to find who Jane's parents were. Maybe Jane was her middle name. Lewis M Hammock was the son of Robert Hammock if I remeber right. A Hammock researcher said he thought Johnson Hammack might have been the son of another Lewis Hammock who was the cousin of the Robert Hammock in Ga. I did find a record that Absolom Hammock was excommunicated from a church in Jasper co Ga in the 1820's. I think he drank a lot. Apparently Absolom was the kind of man that got in a lot of trouble over the years where his brother Milner Echols was involved in politics and a leading citizen except when they had the Ga land lottery he was accused of wrong doing. The lots were of a certain size usually 2021/2 acres many times depending on the lottery and the county in the lottery. After mapping out the lots in a county there were areas left over on the edges of the countys since the counties were not perfectly square. In other words if the eastern border of a county followed the course of a river it usually did not run in a straight line so therre might have been some acreage left between the bounderies of the lot and the river so it was a fragment of a lot not assigned to anyone in the lottery winning land in that county in the lottery. It may have only been 10 or 20 acres but it was sitll land and they had to sell it to so Milner who was in charge of the lottery in one of the counties in the lottery bought some of the left over land at a fair price and some of his political enemies charged him with wrong doing but it was later decided that he did nothing wrong. He bought the land as a citizen of the state of Ga at a fair price. Milner always seened to live in the same county in Ga as Solomon and Jane lived. Wilkes in the 1790's and Clarke co Ga in the early 1800's and Jasper co Ga after 1811. Solomon is listed next in order of people who paid their taxes in Clarke co Ga in 1806 or 1807. They had to go to a central location in the county to pay their taxes and in the ledger book of those who paid their taxes Solomon Ray was listed thatn Milner Echols. Either they went on the same day to pay their taxes and just happened to pay their taxes about the same time or they went together because they were related through mrriage or at lease knew each other. I still can not find a Ray-Echols connection. Jane might have been Milner's sister. He was born in 1772 and she was born in 1779. If you have any info you can share with me please let me know. Thanks, Ross
