I don't know the answer to your question. A Moses Echols was living in Maury Co., Tenn., as reflected in the 1820 census. I believe that he was married to Sally Farmer although I don't know who his children were. I think that he may have been a descendent of Richard Echols and Caty Evans. I don't think that he is the same as the Moses Eckols who was living in the Sumner/Wilson Co., Tenn., to at least 1810.
Besides Moses, there was an Abraham Eckols who had married Nancy Dorris in 1815 (I believe in Davidson Co.,TN) but who died in 1823 in Sumner Co., TN. He had a number of children.
Occasionally I have come across the surname Equals in Tennessee and have wondered if that could be a variant of Eckols/Echols.
There was a Revolutionary War veteran of Virginia named John Echols who settled in Williamson Co., Tenn., by 1810 but I am not familiar with his family members.
The Eckolses who settled in the Wilson and Sumner Co., Tennessee, area still have a number of loose ends too. Although Elkaneh and Larkin Eckols left identifiable heirs, there were others who appear in the early court and land records of those counties from the late 1790s and early 1800s, notably Joel, Moses, John, and David. I appreciate that there was a John Echols who appears on the 1820 census for Wilson Co. with about 6 children and who later moved to Illinois; that he was born in Virginia in the 1770s, and that he is probably the son of William Eckols II of Halifax Co./Pittsylvania Co., Va. However, there was also a John Echols who died leaving an estate in Wilson Co., TN, in 1823. Who was he? On the early tax records for Wilson Co., we read of Jack Eckols, Sr. (these records were from about 1807). I assume that was opposed to the younger Jack Eckols. Could one of those Johns have been a son of Joel Eckols? David Eckols similarly appears in the records of Sumner Co., TN, in the late 1790s. My suspicion is that he was also a son of Joel Eckols. Of course, I think Milner Echols indicated that Joel had no children. On the other hand, Milner indicated that Elkaneh had a large family. From Elkaneh's will, his large family consisted of his wife and three children. Is that really a large family by early 19th century standards?
On the other hand, he may have taken in a few children from deceased relatives families.
Although I think that Moses Eckols is a likely prospect for being the father of my forebear John Echols (b. ca 1798 in TN), David is also a possibility. John's third son was named David W. Eckols. Occasionally children were named after uncles.
Unfortunately the early deeds of Wilson and Sumner Co., TN., usually only list the names of the men and not their wives although I happen to know that a number of them were married. Elkaneh, for instance, had married Elizabeth Anderson in Amelia Co., VA., in 1782 yet I haven't found her name with his on any deeds (although after he died in 1805 you may find her name mentioned with his).
I know that there were members of the Eckles family who were living in Smith Co., TN., later on but have not seen any of its early deed records.
I haven't come across the name Garrett in connection with any Tennessee Eckols members so far. Of course, there were a number of Arkansas Eckolses who were born between 1810 and 1820 in Tennessee, like Isom I believe, and I have no idea where they came from.
That's about all I have to say for now.
Lance
