Well, Cuz Jan,
Thanks for the kind words. I only ever intended to help, not instruct.
I received an e-mail a few days ago which may help ALL of us understand a bit more about John of Haverhill.
I have not verified the statements made, so everyone should be cautious regarding this information. But, for what it is worth, here it is.
begin quote:
John Eaton "the eldest son" of Thomas and Helen Eaton of Beausall in the parish of Hatton, Warwickshire, was bapized there 26 Dec. 1590. About 1618 he married Anne _____ There is no record of their marriage in Hatton so probably they were married in a nearby parish where she came from. He was a church warden at Hatton in 1627 (B.T.S.).
Some time after the baptism of his last child in September 1639 probably in the early sping of 1640 the family emigrated to New England where they first settled in Salisbury. There he received grants of land in 1640, "43 and "46. He moved to Haverhill where he became a selectman in 1648. In April 1650 he was chosen Clerk of the Market of Haverhill and in April 1652 he was made "Commissioner to End Small Causes," that is, a Justice of the Peace. He was on trial jury 31 March 1646 and the grandjury in September 1646. He appears in a few land records ( Old Norfolk County Deeds 1:22, 44).
Anne died at Haverhill 5 February 1660/61. He married Phebe Dow, widow of Thomas Dow of Haverhill. She died in 1672 and administration on her estate was granted April 8 1673. John Eaton died at Haverhill 29 October 1668. He was a cooper as well as a farmer.
