pew. I think that she was lucky to escape that marriage with her life, as there was scuttlebutt about her being caught up with the demon.
My guess is thatone of two things were true (1) Either she suffered from emotional illness or (2) she just had a mind of her own and that was not consistent with the Governor's thinking. I do recall reading something about her ideas with regard to the worship service and, apparently, they were not consistent with the orthodxy of the time. Nor do I know how seriously out of step Mrs. Eaton was. The story is, and I have not documented it, that she was booted from the church. That, presumably, was when she and her son, T Jr., returned to England and, I suppose, he then made his way to ireland.
I'd like to think that all of the wonderful contemporary Eatons I've met here and in person are, in their own way, making up for those of earlier times whom we might not admire were we to know them personally.
BTW< one claim that my dad always made, one of which I am extremely proud, is that our family, which owned ships in New Haven that traded between New England and the Caribbean, "never carried slaves," unlike the ancestors of another family (whom I know well and like very much).
As we dig for gold, we are likely to find some osified garbage among the bright nuggets will be some unpleasant reality.
