Hi:
Alan makes an excellent point.
First, if you can take the time to do so, it might be well worth youyr while to set down some weekend and dash a snail mail off to all of your relatives, telling them that you are pursuing Eaton familiy genealogy and asking them to tell you all that they know about their family heritage. At the least, you7 are bound to receive a few good stories; at most, you may strike gold.
Second, the genealogy of the Eatons in Cheshire is FAIRLY well know, coming to an end there with the marriage of a female Eaton into the Grosvenor line. A keyword search of grosvenor would serve you will -- here, as well as at other site and through major search engines.
Third, is it possible for you to persuade a U.K. relative to do some hunting at the Public Records Office in SCster? That would be nice. If not, then plan a dream trip to the wonderful County of Cheshire and allow at least four days for research. From personal experience "over there," I can tell you that three days is not enough, especially for the new researchers like my wife and me.
Fourth, as much fun as it is to dash around searching for one ancienht or another, and I cannot -- in good conscience advize anyone NOT to do this because it is so much fun, the best way to find the previous unknown generation is to begin with the present known one. In other words, start backwards.
Fifth, tell everything you know about your family here. You will be amazed at the probability that someone may be able to add to what you know, as they may well have been following the same lines. You will likely be cousins.
Sixth, if you can determine the entry point in your country (assuming that it is the U.S.) you may well have half-way home. For every record entry for a ship arriving in the U.S., there is usually a recording of the place from which it departed. using Yahoo, Google, or one of the other major search engines, try the keyword, Ships lists and a date or period.
Again, tell us where your native family was located and we may be able to help you further.
Inthe meantime, good hunting.
if I may put in a plug for our Eaton Families Association, please consider this to have done so. We are all "in it together" and working hard for the same information. Use the keyword, Association, here and you will find just about everything you need to know about it.
