Yes, that's one big, important thought. For example, my wife has said to me repeatedly, "Follow the female lines" and others here have said that as well.
Another approach would be to form a (loose?) heraldry study group (I posted on this tonight in answer to Barbara, who has always shared what she does for the benefit of all.
All the people with a North Carolina interest, for example, could get post their information to each other, review it together, add it up, see what makes sense and not, and then post answers and questions. Just for the record, my Dad told me repeatedly the my family was related to John Eaton of tennessee, congressman and Secretary of the Navy, and husband of the "infamous" Peggy O'Neill Eaton, apparently falsely rumored to be the mistress of Andrew Jackson. I wonder about that, but is it my first genealogical priority? No.
But, if all (or some) those with a Tennessee interest worked together, maybe John and peggy would show up in that work and I would have my answer sooned that age 104. Maybe not, but the Tennessee people would surely make progress and, then, hypothetically, need to Connect with the North Carolinia interest people, with the Virginians, with the Welsh, etc.
Now, what most do is merely post their interests and read hundreds, maybe thousands of e-mails, sometimes offering shards of information, sometimes receiving something useful.
That has its merits, but it is not all that efficient.
Maybe this is impractical. Maybe not.
Certainly, no damage would be done if people try it. All they would need to do is post their general area of interest and ask if others want to join with them in that focused research.
What do you think?
