I have lerned that arms were in use in France well before they became popular in England at about the time, I think, of the second crusade. I have read that arms were in use in France in the 1200s, or well before the time of Robert de Eyton. I am quite sure that they were in use in what we now know as England well before Robert's time. Richard I and his crusading knights certainly used them; e.g. the red cross.
