Ed, my prior correspondence in May of 2007 was with Steve Mabie, because we separately found a deposition by Jasper Maybie in John Britten's pension file on the new Footnote site. Steve mentioned you in an email as an Eastlick authority.
Jasper Maybie's son Cornelius married Abigail Eastlick, daughter of William Eastlick. That would make Abigail the granddaughter or niece of Alexander Eastlick (both have been suggested). Jasper deposed that he had known John Britten for 40 years in 1820, knew him to be a Revolutionary War soldier, etc. Jasper also testified that John's wife had lived with Jasper's family circa 1783. John married his wife of 1820 in 1795, so it's not clear if Jasper Maybie was talking about her before she was married, or a second earlier wife for John Britten. The former seems more likely after discussion. I was particularly interested in her (Hannah Lott who married John Britten) as part of an attempt to discover where she was born and lived in her early years.
So there are two ties to the Eastlick family in John's pension folder, one direct input from Alexander Eastlick, and a second from Abigail Eastlick's father-in-law, Jasper Maybie. Here are the notes I took back in May of 2007:
1. In John's original petition for the pension, Judge John Dow said that Alexander Eastlick gave evidence that John was in "reduced circumstances" and in need of the support of his country. John Dow was a judge in Jersey twp and also testified to the same out of his personal knowledge.June 15, 1818.
2.19 Oct 1820 - deposition of John's brother Richard Britten of Seneca Co. John enlisted
in 2nd NJ in 1782 and served to end of war; deponent is not a pensioner; deponent frequently saw John Britten during his term of service.
3.17 Oct 1820 - deposition of Jasper Mabey, of the town of Jersey [Steuben Co]; aged 66 years and [7?] months; "well acquainted with John Britten and has been upwards of forty years. That the said John Britten enlisted in the Jersey line in the summer of the year 1782. That for part of the time the said John Britten was in the service his wife lived at my house - That in the summer of 1783 after the termination of the Revolutionary War the said John Britten returned home - That after his return he showed me his discharge...";
The children's names listed in one family group sheet for Alexander Eastlick and Elizabeth Britton are William, John, Frances (Fanny), Elizabeth, and Jacob. If this Elizabeth was indeed John's sister, then Frances may also be a Britton family name carryover. Aside from being another sibling of John's, the best candidate so far for grandparents on the Britton side would be a Nathaniel and Frances Britton of Staten Island.
