Hi Wilburt, from what I have learned about the family name is that it was originally from Scandinavia, the viking name being Ieavesson, which meant son of Eve.It then came over to Scotland, where apparently the Scandinavians travelled the lenghth of the country, of which some people dispute, and of which I can only go by what I learnt from different reference books. Some say that the surname means son of a servant, of which I cannot confirm.I live in Liverpool, and they pronounce our name Eessom, but where my father was originally from (Wansford near Peterborough in Huntingdon/
Cambridgeshire ) they pronounce our name Essom. My father's family still live there. As you mention our name has been mispelt and mispronounced over the centuries.I do possess my family bible dated 1876, with a few photo's of my forebears. This is only a condensed edition of what I have, I am still researching. We might never know the right meaning. Some have also said that the name was Anglisized to make things easy, for whom i don't know. The surname can be found in the Scottish surname section at Liverpool Reference Library.I hope this is of use to you, I will let you know if I find anything else.Kind regards.
Bill Eassom
