Thanks John,
Initially I was of the same opinion. Some preliminary research had indicated that Northamptonshire, had a number of Easoms in the late 1500s / early 1600s, as well as a lot of Ishams. Further to that in Cornwell (where my Easom/Esam families lived), I had records of Isoms in the late 1500s.
Also the soundex code used by the IGI, put them into the same category (although this is not always correct I know!). so thought the pronounciation should be Is-ham or Es-ham
(this made sense!)
I then had a discussion with a lady from New Zealand that oversees the One Name Studies
for the name Isham. It then I discovered that the name should be pronounced eye- sum with other variations Hysom, Hyson, Ison etc.
She was certain that Easom/Esam could be no way related......
Of course, we may never know, where the name originated from....but we will continue to delve.
French you say......possibly Hugenots (Cornwell is at the southern most tip of the UK)
I would be keen to hear in other ideas you may have as to the derivation of the name Easom.......also do you have a family connection to this name?
Cheers
Glenn
